Good luck updating the software if you plan to use a new HDD/SSD. Good luck finding a model that will allow you to use a custom OS when you can't update the native OS.

If only it was that simple. Only the OG fat units allow you to play the PS2 discs (even with CFW) while that model and the ultra slim require you to go through a nightmare of converting ISOs in various ways to make them eventually load up on the CFW.

You stick the recovery file from Sony's website onto a USB drive, I don't see what the problem is. Ideally, you'd install the new storage before you mod it

HEN has made pretty much every model of PS3 capable of running a softmod. Sure, it's not a full CFW but it still does a lot of the same stuff

You must be trolling. The PS3 is the biggest piece of shit I've ever owned. Netflix is the only "streaming" app it has and it's laggy af. The EvilNat CFW is buggy and randomly doesn't boot games or even the console itself. Wireless controllers are the worst I've ever used (I have 4), they randomly unbind meaning you gotta hook them up to a cable and also randomly turn off despite a healthy battery. Streams files from the PC only if you set up a media server that transcodes stuff to the codecs PS3 likes. Bluray drive is okay but no 4K/HDR.
As someone who got this piece of shit for dirt cheap, there's a reason why it was being sold dirt cheap. It fucking sucks. It's genuinely just a frustration box with no games. Just buy a fucking low-end PC with a wireless keyboard and it will be infinitely better.

My HDMI chip and also my bluetooth chip died in my PS3. I know I could replace them but it would probably just break it further, thereby dashing my hopes further. It's better to just let it sit there with the possibility staying alive for now.

I got a PS3 Slim myself recently and loaded it it games. It is pretty good, but newish OEM controllers are scarce now. I thought ebay would be loaded with cheap, new old stock. I obviously missed that boat because all there is are no-name knock offs.

Shame. I got 3 Dualshock 3s that are great condition(outside of the contact pad being weak inside). My CFW PS3 collecting dust unless I want to play some PS3 exclusives. (Gran Turismo, MGS4, Siren) I find most games on the PS3 cringe though.

IMO DS3 is the best controller(feels just right) and since it has hall effect analog sticks they don't go bad as well as pressure sensitive face buttons. Using it for Duckstation/PCSX2 is basically required.
