This, 2000 and 2003 server for me, i guess XP was ok too, once they fixed the majority of the issues it had on launch and added a basic firewall.
I really enjoyed XP-64, since it was basically 64-bit Server 2003 with a XP skin on top.
Never had much issues with drivers either despite its reputation, you just had to check there were drivers before you bought hardware, never had any of the driver crash issues.
Was still running XP-64 on my i5-750 until 2013.

It's true, and this is why I set myself up a Windows 7 PC for fun. It is true though that you have to suffer some modern OS if you want to do everything.
Still, Windows 7 can be used now and it is exactly as it was in 2009, but also on hardware released years afterwards.
People compile current web browsers for it still, there is still good lite software out there that supports it.

Linux on the other hand has been fucked by unstable userspace API. Even if you install the exact software versions you liked the most (if you can find it), you will find you can't do anything like install a current web browser without shitting it up.

In 2012 I liked Linux a lot more than Windows 7.
In 2025 I like Windows 7 more than Linux, and Windows 7 has not gotten any better in that time.

None of that stuff happens here. I was getting security updates till 2019, but the trick is to tweak it, patch it up and leave everything (particularly security) to good third party applications. That requires time and knowledge that most people don't have. XP/2009 out of the box is useless, but once you update it, everything works as expected.

eww, but it is nice how fast and RAM-light 7 is. Ubuntu 24 as well, that's why I haven't gone back and brought out my 7 install from hibernation after replacing it with Ubuntu on the old Ivy Bridge machine I tested 7 on.
