so I installed ubuntu latest version (non-lts) and it restarted on me automatically without knowing.

I'm currently using it as a file server and it keeps prompting for milliions of dailty updates for packages etc... too

Literally worse than windows 11

Did you configure it to restart after updating critical components? It doesn't do this out of the box.
>it keeps prompting for milliions of dailty updates for packages
That's not something Ubuntu does. By default it installs updates automatically. If you disable automatic updates, it doesn't install them but still never prompts anything.

Either way, the file /var/log/apt/history.log has all the package transactions listed along with the time and the trigger. Worth having a look.

no i didn't configure it anything.

I've just been ignoring the millions of daily package updates and nofifications

by default it doesn't auto update, it pops up with a nofitication lol

I just updated to Debian 13 "Trixie"! I didn't even know a Debian update was in the works until APT decided to tell me that Debian 12 was changed to oldstable. I'm so glad we get a refresh. I'll be keeping my server on Debian 12 for now, but my laptop is feeling fresh and new on 13.

I just supervised Plasma Shell with OpenRC on my Gentoo system. I got fed up with it Krashing due to a Qt bug and not restarting properly.

On a Systemd system, it handles this for you but still somehow nobody has figured out how to do user services properly without it.

At least now I don't have to re-spawn it manually every time it randomly dies.

I see, I thought you're using Ubuntu Server.
On Kubuntu it's an unobtrusive tray icon, not a window. Does the Settings button give you any relevant options?

Wait...

Lowkey, is XFCE the best DE right now?

When did this happen? This is some of the most intuitive desktop and taskbar configuration I've ever tried. The compositor is snappy, clean, fresh! They added some sauce to the animations I don't know, but it makes the DE feel nice and soulful.

Kinda suspected as much. Even had video memory all the way up and turned on 3D acceleration in case that somehow helped. Spoiler: it didn't.

Welp. No menu for me, I guess

Right, so is there a way to fall back to a text version or rescue mode or something so I can reinstalled LILO with the tweaked settings? I tried firing up a live Lubuntu CD and chrooting to my main install through that, but when attempting to reinstall LILO that way, I got something about not being able to access "dev/hda" because "Permission denied"

On Wayland+KDE, when I edit text and keep an arrow key down to scroll it one letter at a time, and when I press ctrl to switch to word by word mode, the cursor just stops. I need to lift the arrow key and press it again to get the cursor moving word by word. Is there a way to fix this? That stop doesn't happen with x11.

Is it normal for PipeWire not to activate Mic / Line-in unless you choose a surround sound audio profile?

I have stereo output profile or stereo input profile but no stereo output + stereo input. The only way to get both input + output is via surround sound 2.1 (close enough to stereo but still not the same thing, there is an addition Playback LFE whatever the fuck that is, I guess that's the .1 in Surround Sound 2.1)
