What's the best way to go about building a PC, for less than a new Mac, but ensuring it has excellent latency for music prod?

I know I could buy a Mac 2nd hand, but I want to look at all options. Last time I tried, I just ended up buying a new Mac but I'd really like to avoid that again because Apple disgust me.

Build the PC you want, hardware wise, then install GNU+Linux and utilize the proper kernel or configure your own for low latency.

I tried Manjaro and Ubuntu Studio but too much of my gear doesn't work on Linux, sadly, so it's gotta be Windows.

Man, SuperMega has gotten mean.

Single core CPU performance matters massively for music production so intel win here. Get an i9 if budget allows then you can have 32+ VSTs and plug-ins running in real time

I highly doubt this. Regardless, >>106310557
seems like a good way to get low-latency real time on Windows.

Try running Maschine or Line 6 software on Linux, see how far you get.

Thanks, I'll make a note of it.

From just a quick glance, it seems like there are 3rd party drivers available, but you weren't kidding about it being a bother.
One thought reading the discussion I saw the drivers in:
https://line6.com/support/topic/4426-line-6-with-linux/
Was perhaps use a Windows virtual machine with passthrough to your hardware, in effect getting the best of both worlds.

Thanks man, I just double-checked with a few LLMs, definitely seems do-able.

Maschine is trickier though, as I'm on Ableton; neither work well with WINE. I'm not completely opposed to switching to a native DAW, but it's a bit of an arseache moving to a Maschine alternative atm.

Maybe I should look into finding an alternative and weening myself off. Will be better in the long run.

the best em was created when computers didn't exist, even if you have the most advanced pc, it won't make any difference because you're empty and can't create anything

Nice projection.

Well in my humble opinion, if you can achieve the low latency performance on Windows using incredible hardware ( guarantee you will still come in under cost of Applel markups ), then go for it and keep using what you are familiar/comfortable with.
That said, I found this https://community.native-instruments.com/discussion/4361/using-maschine-on-linux/p1
which shows that the Maschine+ runs on Linux, though it costs 125% more ;3
