I understand why he did what he did in the end. He didn't have any power and the few moments of clarity must have hit like a truck realizing all he could have accomplished if not for a condition he had no control over. I have a close friend with schizophrenia and his moments of clarity have always been heartbreaking to see.

Yes. If he had taken anti-psychotics and other schizo medicines, he would most likely never ended up in northern Oregon. He felt the schizophrenia connected him to God and he did not want to cut that connection with medicine.
