If you paid enough to cover both the training and the inference costs, you'd be paying more than four times as much, and I'm not even kidding.

Tokens are getting cheaper but users consume more tokens.
Web searches, coding agents, summarize this 500 page pdf for me, etc. use far more tokens than when the ChatGPT API was in its infancy.

The time of reckoning is coming. The bubble is about to burst. These companies have been unprofitable for too long so now that a lot of companies are relying on them. They can hike prices without losing many customers. Open source models have always been the correct choice. If you don't own your infra then you don't own your app.

The open source models are pretty good and it gives you a lot more privacy and less cybersecurity risk to run stuff locally. I think most of the money will be made by companies like TSMC and ASML.

If OpenAI gets, say, 4 billion users they can moneysize at $20 per month - "just twice as much as Google and Facebook" - thats $480 billion in annual revenue.
Minus the datacenter costs, contributions to NVDA stockholders pensions and Sam's Supercars fund, that would make an OpenAI valuation of pure trillions dead cheap, so it would.

Legitimately, these people do not live in reality. The vast majority of AI users right now are being paid for by investment money, with all these companies handing out free tokens in the hopes of capturing a dominant marketshare that they can LATER convert to paying customers.

What none of these retards understand is that nobody is going to pay for any of this stuff. Individuals won't pay, and businesses are quickly suffering crippling losses from trying to offload their shit to AI firms.

Local stuff is a complete waste of time if you don't have 10k to blow on some datacenter equipment.

Honestly, it's not even worth the electricity cost to run.
