If we had a software architecture that, when tasked with a certain line of work, can learn during runtime and get as good as average humans over reasonable time frames, people would call that AGI. You don't need superintelligence for AGI. It however is still a distant technology and won't emerge from making statistical models of pirated textbooks at scale.

i didnt say superintelligent. that is ASI, or "wildly beyond the best human in every field".
humankind cannot build a superintelligent system, since we cannot predict or know what superintelligence looks like. any computer system that can do intellectual work matching the quality of the best human, will almost certainly do so much faster than the best human, which could be misinterpreted as superintelligence. but its just a consequence of the LLM having huge quantities of computer compared to a human brain.
it seems obvious LLMs are doing the equivalent of "just make shit up and see what sticks" and maybe thats because they're incentivized incorrectly. an LLM saying "i dont know" to a straightforward question isnt very impressive, but it would be immensely more useful if they could be honest about what they do and dont know.
