Tech giants work to give it high compatibility. Will also have the effect of making it gay.

Same thing Google did, trash everything userland and start over, then fork the kernel and use a stable driver ABI because the unstable driver ABI has proven retarded.

It's already near perfect. Some kind of plug n play distro that automatically installs any driver would be kino.

Windows is doing a pretty good job of running themselves into the ground. You could do nothing and probably have a better offering. Windows 11 feels like a cheap Android phone now. Loaded with bloat and now with fancy AI spyware that nobody wants.

OP most likely means for the desktop, where it objectively doesn't "just work". Even priced at FREE, lintroons still cannot convince people to use their crap. How long have the zealots been shilling it? Certainly since the late '90s.

You don't. There's no need to.
You should focus on making the OS inherently better. Build it and they will come.

That would mean they have to abandon their communist ideals (FOSS) and accept being part of the private enterprise system that the world revolves around.

Ubuntu is rightfully hated because it's trash that's comically inferior to every single other "just works" distro. Mint is great and anyone who shits on it is a homo.

The current trajectory is stable and growing slowly enough that teams can keep pace with user growth.

We have everything in place for all sorts of users. First, the primordials (Arch, Debian, Fedora) are the baseline. These show the vision of what a solid base looks like.

Then there are the distros with a userland focus - Ubuntu, Mint, Gnome, KDE Linux, Pop!, Elementary, ChromeOS Flex. These are showcases for different ideas for the userland space, giving Linux users choice. No ideas are more valid than the other. You can even buy support for these.

And then you have the stuff for enthusiasts. Arch with Hyperland. Lightweight DEs for old hardware. Gentoo. Esoteric stuff that normies won't go for.

Choice makes Linux competitive.

Make it just work.
I'll give you a quick recap of what happened last week to me
>winblows 10 about to expire
>lets try linux but with a retardproof distro for gayming
>google, find out about nobara
>install without issue
>audio jack in the back does not work
>steam downloads 1gb of shit but dota and tf2 work
>poo2 doesnt start, try 5 different version of proton without success
>go back to windows for the day
>2 days later, boot loonix disk to fix audio issues
>install hdajackreset as suggested by r*dditman
>5 bloat packages get installed
>barely get the back audio jack functioning after 30mins by rerouting the front jack to it
>audio sounds like shit
>steam wants to download the same shit it downloaded last time, again
I guess its skill issue but I would have expected that basic things like AUDIO just worked from the get go

Moved to Fedora Silverblue and never looked back.
There are flatpaks for everything, even osu!.
There is toolbox for command line tools like yt-dlp and gallery-dl.
I use Boxes for Windows 7 nostalgia and for learning other Linux distros.
Steam works great and every game I play runs out of the box.
For other launchers Bottles works amazing.
Fuck Microsoft and fuck indians. There is literally no reason to use that sinister piece of shit OS anymore.

Executable install wizard framework that any application can use to install itself. Manually installing something that is outside of a "good goy" repository is cancer. Getting arbitrary software on Windows is way more user friendly.

Have file managers prompt you for sudo access when making file changes that require root authority, instead of forcing you to do separate terminal navigation and copypasting to move files around.
