so, im an oldfag that has been out of the loop from PC components for the last decade, i was using an intel i5 3400, 16GB DDR3, SSD for the last 9 years until my motherboard shat the bed, there was no point in getting a used motherboard to replace the damaged one since i could get a more recent branded PC for dirt cheap.

So last week i got a used Optiplex 5050 with a Core i5 7600 , chose this machine because i could still use the same DDR3 sticks i had, put the same SSD and system booted right on, NO dedicated GPU, no need to reinstall Windows, uninstalled previous motherboard drivers, installed the new motherboard drivers and HOLY shit the jump in performance was something i didnt expect to notice this much.

I had the idea that performance was somewhat stalled in the last decade in regards to CPU computing speed and the only noticeable jump in performance will be using an SSD, now i notice the smoothness when watching Youtube, how responsive the system feels, i just ordered an m.2 nvme drive to replace my old samsung sata SSD and im curious if i will also notice a huge jump in performance and speed doing my daily tasks.

I know the jump from Intel 3rd gen to 7th gen should be something that will be perceived, i just didnt think it would be this much, i stoped updating my system because the jump in performance was so miniscle, almost unperceivable unless you went the austistic route running benchmarks, but not something i would notice on daily use so i stopped, the last GPU ive ever had in my old system was a Radeon 7790 3gb.

Anyways, im just wondering if i would notice the same jump in performance if i make the jump from a 7th gen Intel to a 10th gen, does anyone here still does yearly upgrades to your systems?

I still haven't found any software that makes me want to upgrade my i7-3770.

you're literally 7 years behind bud
a 7th gen i5 is pathetic, worse than a 7 year old Ryzen. Even Pentiums are better now. There's a bigger leap between a 2nd gen Ryzen and a 7th gen i5 than a 3rd gen i5 and a 7th gen i5.

i salvaged RAM sticks from broken computers at work over the years, my old motherboard had 4 RAM slots so i upgraded for free over 10 years.

i see g hasnt changed at all in the oast decade, let me guess... i should install gento ?

>>106330518
i know im running a 7 year old machine, and until 2 weeks ago i was running a n 11 years old machine, ive been checking prices on Ebay for those Optiplex and Lenovo barebone machines and im seeing some Core i5 8th and 9th gen for under $100... would the jump be as noticeable going from 7th gen to 9th gen as it was going from 3rd gen to 7th gen? are you suggesting i should make the switch to AMD Ryzen then? are they the good guys now?

You will definitely notice (and they are also on the supported CPU list for Windows 11 if that matters to you, meaning you won't need to use any bypasses).

Not really. You will notice faster loads but it's not huge.
>the jump from Intel 3rd gen to 7th gen should be something that will be perceived, i just didnt think it would be this much
The real difference is in the size of the transistors. It has to do with the fabs they use rather than any actual design improvement.
>the last GPU ive ever had in my old system was a Radeon 7790 3gb
Just build out a proper new PC. It's not that expensive. Even a 4060 will be good.

lol.
It's like $100 for a good kit.
Don't bother with old machines.
If you're half serious about computing, just put together a new rig.
Yes, an AMD CPU is the best option right now.

It's the jeet devs.
Different races of people have different levels of tolerability when it comes to things like input latency.
They tolerate latencies as high as 1,000 ms from click to display of a menu, for instance.
Same reason why Java interfaces have so much lag.

nice, in theory it will be a 30% jump in performance going to a gen 9, might do it later this year.

>>106330698
ok thanks i will check some benchamrks and reviews to see whats the best deal for cheap, i dont really use my PC for anything heavy to be honest so a current gen system is just not worth it for me.

I suppose the animations look nice when they work and when they run smoothly and when they don't lag but I really wish everything didn't HAVE to be animated :(

7th Gen is basically a polished 3rd gen since AMD opted out of competition for multiple years. 8th gen + is much faster and so are the ryzens. Intels new embedded line is something I'm watching as they're starting to get refurb and used examples - the N100/N300 stuff, it's faster than the 4970K I used to have and I don't game or anything intense anymore. I bought a N5030 Thinkpad and it's speed was sufficient, but thinkpads quality is in the shitter and it corrupted the bios when the battery ran out - an issue documented years ago now that Lenovo has been fixed

Yeah. I don't know if you'll care about this, but it was basically soft disclosed that Intel is based out of Israel and comes with a backdoor that sends them all of your data 24/7. "Intel inside" was unironically them laughing in your face.

I don't exactly have a lot of trust in AMD in general but there haven't been any complaints to the level of Intel and the performance is rather nice so no reason not to use them.

I wouldn't install Windows 11. Stick with what you have and if you have 10 then be sure you install the de-bloated and de-spywared version from the sticky in the Friendly Windows Thread

It depends on the OS but you seem to have reached a sweet spot. Newer hardware might be better for the most taxing software or AI, but everything else is negated by the increasing bloat and lazy Indian coding of the last 10+ years.

It's highly recommended to stick with XP, or at worst 7 if you're already running it but if you HAVE to upgrade or are already on 8 or later than yes, you should download 10 LTSC

I can't in good conscientious recommend an unsupported OS the to OP, since he uses it as his daily, and this could include sensitive activities like shopping or banking. XP/7 just has too many vulnerabilities for me to be comfortable with that recommendation, but I'm always interested in hearing the latest opinions, as I would like to be able to use XP and 7 a lot more.

An AM4 system with DDR4 ram performs just 20 percent less than an equivalent AM5 system with DDR5 ram, but is a third of the price.
If you're able to, I'd just recommend going for an AM4 system. There's really nothing to gain from AM5 besides wasting money.

New software is more complex and not nearly as optimized. That is just a matter of capitalism, scale, and need to pump shit out faster.

It just doesn't make sense to try to optimize every widget when raw power is cheap and plentiful.
