Why can't we just send a bunch of satellites filled with solar panels in orbit with the sun and then transmit all the energy wirelessly back to earth
Anonymous No.106331189
because there's cheaper options

We already do, that's what's powering this simulation.

it'd probably make more sense to just put mirrors in space to direct sunlight where you want it and leave the solar panels on earth than to put the panels in space and try to transmit power via laser or something on the satellite itself

You mean a dyson sphere?

a dyson sphere? No we need those trillions for AI chatbots

What's a vacuum going to do in outerspace? Space is already a vacuum.

Wireless power transmission is pretty shitty.

More like a dyson swarm.
We need BLAM!'s Megastructure is what we need.

At current technology levels, transmission is too inefficient (the amount of power reaching the ground loses a lot of what was initially gathered on the satellite), you'd need huge amounts of land to build enough receiving antennas, and the required accuracy is more than we can achieve (the transmission beam wouldn't be able to stay on target and transmit power to the receiving antennas). That's before you even consider the issues inherit to it being a satellite, such as needing to send up astronauts & parts for maintenance, Kessler Syndrome, and you putting your power-generating infrastructure in a place where anyone could shoot it down before you're even aware what's happening.

Okay what if we used a wire then?

Sometimes the beam misses and you instantly regret your lack of fire stations.
