Make a Choice
Ok /g/ help me make a choice. But first before you help me make a choice, I need to tell you what is going on
>go to estate sale of an old boomer that died
>see this old computer
>they tell me that it's hard to let go because it was (obviously) the grandma's computer
>they don't even know if it works
>buy it anyway as I amuse the other customers who are reminded how heavy these things are
>go home and attempt to run it. It has issues, but I fix them and get it running
>windows 95 welcomes me
>look through the PC due to complete curiosity
>there are various files consisting of people at a prom in the 90s, family BBQ gathering fliers from 2005, 2006, 2007. Bible verses, a file consisting of "symptoms of a stroke" and images of random pets
>more random personal crap. No sensitive documents, just more and more personal crap. Looks like the woman was most active in 2006, 2007.

Here is where I need help. Do I keep it as a time capsule in honor of the old lady? Will it be haunted? Or do I start a fresh start. Chatgpt said it's hard to make a decision because while it is a time capsule, it will be depressing to utilize it.

Pic related. I found it and the toys r us majora's mask preview VHS as well.

Can't you retrieve their personal files in a thumb drive and give it to their relatives? It's their life, not yours. Also check for active emails accounts etc.

It is the honorable thing to do. Send this to the family.
>Will it be haunted?
...No.
>Or do I start a fresh start.
After you do tell the family. You could be making someone very happy. Some of these might have been lost a long time ago. And be honest with them, and don't forget to erase the data after they give you the ok to do so and you've deliver the data to them, if they chose that ofc.

The only thing going on inside is a ton of dust...and it clicks and clacks like a fucking factory. Any way I can reduce that nonsense?

Anons I forgot to mention, I asked them if they wanted any of the data if I could get it going again and they said they won't have time to meet after today and don't want it back. They live a few states away and only visited to sell her stuff. I drove pretty far so it would be hell to go back today. The more I think about it though the more I think I'm just going to nuke all of it. It creeps me the hell out, honestly.

If they already said that they don't want the data back, then just nuke it and do a fresh install. Just look up all the drivers first, or see if you can somehow get the driver files from the HDD before you nuke it.
>clicks and clacks like a fucking factory
SOVL. I kinda miss this from older computers.
Anyway, see where the noise is coming from. Could be a bad bearing on one of the fans.

Okay here is what you do.

>Back up everything in there. Everything. It's old, so even a 10 dollar dlash drive with 100 gig should hold it.
>Give the family you bought it from the USB, tell them what you found.
>THEN, After ensuring it's backed up a second place, like another drive in case they ask for another copy, THEN wipe and use the PC

I think this is best.

In my case, nothing since my drives are encrypted. Nothing to hide, I've just gotten used to it from following the Arch wiki.

The drive I use for my Windows installation isn't encrypted, but it doesn't matter since the only thing I have on any of my drives are maymays, animu, and vidya that runs on my /g/-certified toaster. I should really get around to implementing a media drive.

For other anons, I imagine some glownigger agency visiting their next of kin to ask some questions.

There's the occasional CRT thread here and there, but the OP is usually some deranged faggot. Every single thread devolves into a shitflinging contest between said faggot (and friends) and the faggot chasers in the thread--par for the course for the majority of /g/ threads. More over, interest in CRTs has become associated with Zoomers. Oldfags have Zoomer Derangement Syndrome, so they just can't help but interject with their oldfag wisdom.

You're better off checking out the CRT general on /vr/, /g/ is kill.

I got a 2010 netbook a while back, didn't have much on it, most valuable data was normie iTunes songs and old .ipas
I'm not into privacy invasion but it was kinda nice to find a PC from the final days of PCs being mainstream, when you pick up a used PC from today in 10 years if it'll even power on to begin with you'll open the Windows 11 calculator and it'll read "calculator needs an update to continue, check your internet connection"
Truly depressing times we live in.
Anyways I made an image of the HDD i store it away on my NAS in case I'd ever need it for whatever reason, installed Linux on the netbook.
You should do the same, backup drive, since it's a desktop and easy to replace just swap the drive for actual use and keep the old one on a shelf.

I'd say retrieve the files and offer them to them. If they don't want them then you should probably delete them. If you're really unsure you can keep a backup somewhere.

Put the pics and verses and shit into some usb or google drive and give it (or the link) to the family saying you found some stuff they might want. Then format the thing for your use. USB you have to buy it and give it to them, but the link will keep wasting your cloud storage quota until you delete it, and they won't have downloaded it and get angry at you.

What are your optiplex's specs? Furthermore, what monitor?

Now, regarding the departed dear lady's stuff (God bless her soul), I think you should keep a copy as a homage to her. One more thing I'd like to ask, do you think her kin have these files? Shouldn't you ask them if they'd like a copy of them?

Copy the data and store it in a good harddrive. Then you can copy those and send them to the family. If not, you can at least keep them.

Replace the old harddrive, IDE to CF or SD adapters are cheap.

It's not about the family. It's not about the old lady. It's about (You). Are you a person who can show kindness to a stranger without any possibility of thanks? How far will you go to honor someone you didn't know, who had little impact on the world, and has been quickly swallowed up by the abyss of time? All it takes is posting the data on reddit or whatever and saying "Hey old lady, you're gone now, time marches forward and life goes on, but we didn't throw you out like trash."

Are humans creatures which throw each other out like trash? Or can we take a minute to celebrate each other's lives?
