Need a better way of storing files.
I am currently using a private discord server that I created just for myself so I can store random files and links. I know that this is incredibly stupid when it comes to privacy and security, so I'm looking for a way to self host it. I need something private, end to end encrypted and self-hostable that allows you to have multiple channels for different topics and such. I also need it to be able to store files forever and work on my phone as well. Any recommendations?

just use discord and engineer a system of obfuscation that u need a code to crack

plenty of smart people have done whatr u done OP too btw, using discord as a CDN.
discord actually addressed this by adding auth key strings to the images now, that expire after awhile. just to make it harder

Which part of this sounded like a viable long-term storage solution to you, op?

I need a way to exchange files and add to it on both of my devices. Carrying around a hard drive or a USB is counter intuitive for this. I already have two USB sticks that I need for other things.
I'm talking about a way to have everything organized in different channels for different topics, including images.
For example, I have a channel for hardware stuff with relevant photos and links attached to the corresponding text.

>>106338855
Precisely why I'm looking for an end to end encrypted service. Didn't you read what I said?

its actually one of the best solutions for quick notes, especially if you use the thing anyway for chatting. one less program to learn. their powerful rest api lets u do everything with a self bot, or u can make a real bot.

whyd you even make this stupid ass thread, you're never going to get a better, more organized system that is easier to use than what you have now.
now start building a system that works around it instead of trying to search for the magic product that doesnt exist.

Why not use something like Obsidian? There are several programs like that, and I'm sure there's some open source software you can use in the cloud or something like that.

It's not about storage of large files though. I have an external hard drive as well as 2 flash drives for that reason alone. Here, I'm looking for a way to essentially have different topics that I'm interested in as well as relevant media to the topic in just one organized channel.
For example, let's say you are interested in hardware, you can have one channel that has all the relevant information for you. One sub category (basically one message) for CPUs with attached imagery, one section for RAM stick comparisons as well how much they cost with images attached etc.

Obsidian was designed for note taking. I need it for other use cases as well. Like I said, I'm looking for a self-hostable solution, not a cloud one. I heard that revolt chat is good, but it currently doesn't offer end to end encryption. Otherwise, it fits perfectly. You can self host your own server with channels and all, just like discord.

Get or build a NAS. It'll be your own personal cloud storage. Just as easy to use as any other commercial storage.
Everything encrypted and only you have access.

Organize it as you see fit.
You can even set it up for public sharing.
Turn it into a discord clone if that's what you want.

I already thought about hosting a NAS, the question is what app allows for the functionality of discord channels on a NAS such as a device using TrueNAS?

I didn't necessarily mention Obsidian, but that's the type of program you're looking for. Something that serves as an organized summary. There are N alternatives, including self-hosted options.
In any case, you can organize everything using Markdown in a folder and just use a Markdown reader with YAML metadata or something similar.

Thing is, there already is such software that does exactly what I'm looking for, the only problem is that it isn't e2e encrypted. (See revolt chat)

IRC maybe? Low tech and easy to implement. E2E encryption can be easily added due to the low complexity of IRC tech.

Maybe not ideal, but given it's simple nature, it might be a good choice for customizing

Ok, but what about software? I was specifically asking about software that would allow me to do that. I already have an idea about what kind of hardware I would need for a NAS.

>network, security, compute
>having to integrate encryption into it anyway

vs
>use discord, everything already works
>add a layer of encryption to the data transfer layer
>done

Is there a way to self host a private IRC server that allows for different channels for different topics to exist? If so, I would definitely look into it.
I also heard something about XMPP, but I'm pretty sure no client allows you to have channels, just the one "note to self" option that exists on there won't be enough for me.

Yes. It's basically discord's great great great ancestor.
It allows you to have different channels/rooms for whatever purpose.
Though, as stated before, it is low tech. So text and links only out of the box.
But I'm sure image rendering and file exploring is possible with some customizing.

Nigga built a Homeserver.

You clearly don't need a lot of storage, otherwise discord would be out of the question. You can buy a cheap mini pc for 100-120 bucks on ali, run debian on it and install nextcloud. Then just forward 80 and 443 on your ip, get a free dyn dns (sub)domain and use certbot with letsencrypt to get an ssl certificate. Voila. If you need more storage, at first it's likely sufficient to use usb extension drives, ideally in an mdadm raid1 mirror. If you want to do it properly though, you build a real server (n100 boards are still dirt cheap) and access hdds via sata, but thats going to set you back more.

You can then access your files via the Webinterface, download desktop clients to sync files automatically on windows/mac/linux as well as have dedicated apps on ios and Android.

I was actually thinking about building a NAS before making this thread, but I still want to see what other alternatives there are since my use case doesn't necessarily require me to host a whole NAS just for this reason alone, but I might just do it for this and the plenty of other benefits of having a NAS.

Anyone used Cloudflare r2? You can store up to 10GB for free on r2 then $15 for a terabyte monthly ($0.015/GB) I know google offers like $10 for 2 TB monthly, but again, google.
With CF, you can set up auth and use an s3 browser on any platform.
You can even spin up a CF worker to make a web interface and share pre-signed URLs
