For me, it's MATE.

Pretty solid choice. I despise GTK though so I use LXQT.

Why?

Not him but I also use LxQt and my previous desktop was MATE
I don't see a future in GTK and Gtk3 is just plain worse to current Qt, with less features and worse performance.

I like Xfce more.

Be real, the two are pretty much the same.

Personally? I love xfce
>Light enough for nearly any machine
>Pretty enough to rice if desired
>does everything I need from an environment
>mice are cute.

Qt only has more features with all of the extensions that bloat it up. LXQt mostly just relies on qt6-base that barely does more than GTK2.

Most of what I care about is included, fractional scaling works perfectly in LxQt because of Qt

MATE or Cinnamon, GNOME is always a solid choice

MATE is my favorite, but last time I installed it something constantly (but silently as I don't even know what) broke and asked me if I wanted to send the crash report
Xfce gives me similar vibes but is more consistent

Using it right now. It's not the best, but I needed something that just works right out of the box, and it's doing the job.
I think XFCE is better in general as a lightweight DE, but it also requires a bit more than just changing the GTK theme and wallpaper to make me feel at home, so it's tedious. i3 is preferred to either one, but it's even more tedious.
Plasma is my preferred "modern" DE, but it's not lightweight and not as easy on RAM or battery as MATE (something I have to take into consideration with this machine).

Yes, even GTK3 does that better than qt6-base. GTK4 just adds full-sized thumbnails.

Was it Ubuntu MATE? That would always happen to me, just an Ubuntu thing.

I love how my one or two replies about MATE turned into someone constantly posting it and making threads

Usual suspect, Ubuntu's just really loud in general about shit quietly giving errors in the background.
