maths in CS
im at the end of my CS degree but the only maths subject i've taken is discrete maths (really enjoyed it). i feel like a fraud for having no real maths knowledge outside this. how can i remedy this? which branches are worth exploring? thanks

Take a course in abstract algebra if you want a taste of real maths.

do you think I would need some linear algebra first to make this worthwhile?

Oh, I kind of just assumed that you did linear algebra already.
Yes you should definitely do linear algebra first. Not because it is a prerequisite for algebra (it's not, although it's easier), but because if you're going to do any math in your programming career at all, it will likely involve linear algebra.

nah i've literally only done basic calc and discrete, im entirely uneducated in maths :'(
thanks, i think i'll grab a linear algebra textbook and try abstract algebra afterwards if i have fun.

I'm convinced the entire state of Nevada is an Israeli op since the Adelsons basically run las Vegas with their gambling empire

Take an actual course offered by your university instead of reading a textbook, if you can.

i would like to but i'm in my last semester of a 3 year degree (standard for CS in Aus). there's a lot i would still like to learn inside of CS too but its hard to justify further study, not sure i'm clever enough to pursue a meaningful academic career.
in your view, is there likely to be a limit to how much maths i can learn from textbooks, or just less efficient?

you went through a cs major without going through at least linear algebra and math analysis? but yeah, discrete math is cool.

A course will definitely force you to engage with the material. Unless you're unlucky and get a shit-tier prof it will almost always be better than reading a textbook. That said, it depends on the person a bit. If you have already studied entire courses from textbooks and you have confirmed your knowledge (e.g. through an exam) then you will probably be able to learn linear algebra from a textbook too. I know it's harder for me.

sadly, my uni didn't require any. really wish i took maths electives but i didn't see the fun in it until i took discrete.

>>106346484
the majority of my uni subjects have been really shit/poorly taught so i've been leaning on textbooks to fill gaps a fair bit already, but i can see that this might be a bit more difficult for maths. regardless, i'll give it a go

It's not an op, is a jewish mafia shithole and has been so since Bugsy Siegel operated there.

>Bugsy, btw, used to hang with fascist italians at one point
Kinda odd dude. I don't think Israelis like the NV mob much.

Do islandoids really? That can't be real. Are you planning to get a Master's degree or are you going to stop here?

i think other unis here do tend to require a bit more maths, but mine has a misguided focus on "real world" skills, which kind of means maths and theory are replaced by group work and business IT (adult daycare).
i would love to do a masters at a better uni afterwards but money is a concern and i'm afraid that i'm not clever enough to justify continued study, my impression was always that post grad was for people aiming to be professors or researchers?

Not him but in some fields you literally need a masters degree, otherwise you won't find a job. I know that's the case in math, not sure about CS though. A masters degree is definitely not just professors and researchers though.

graphics uses a bit of vector calculus and a lot of linear algebra

i see. i might try to find someone to speak with about this because idk wtf i'm doing really, in terms of navigating uni/career. i think it is standard to just look for work after CS bachelors here though
