Microsoft Windows 11 24H2 update may cause SSD failures; DRAMless SSDs are more vulnerable.
If you have a potentially vulnerable SSD, revert Windows update, disable automatic Windows update, & use Registry Editor to set 64 MB HMB allocation policy (or disable HMB).
https://www.neowin.net/news/report-microsofts-latest-windows-11-24h2-update-breaks-ssdshdds-may-corrupt-your-data/

RTX 50 Super: might launch in Q4 '25, 24GB VRAM for 5070 Ti & 5080 Super, 18GB for 5070 Super.

>Omissions
RTX 5070: buy if it's reasonably priced & if you plan to work around potential VRAM bottlenecks.
RX 9070 non-XT: worth considering if it's significantly cheaper than the 9070 XT.

Intel 13 & 14th gen i7/9 -K CPUs: BIOS update required due to reliability issues. Recommended to set a CPU VR voltage limit (1.4 or 1.45V).

>Product Notice
Gigabyte RTX 50 & RX 9000 video cards: thermal gel has QC issues, Gigabyte claims only early production batches were affected.
https://www.igorslab.de/en/update-on-thermal-putty-on-gigabyte-graphics-cards-after-further-storage-oil-separation-to-an-alarming-extent-and-silence-as-a-strategy/

Avoid updating Gigabyte motherboard's RGB controller firmware, as it can disable board features such as Q-Flash Plus.

https://www.dsogaming.com/articles/heres-what-happened-to-the-12vhpwr-power-cable-of-our-nvidia-rtx-4090-after-two-years-of-continuous-work/
>So, after some stories that surfaced online about the melting issues of the 12VHPWR power cables for the RTX 5090 and the RTX 4090, I’ve decided to check the one we’ve been using these two years for the RTX 4090. So, what has happened to that power cable? Has it melted? Let’s find out.
>So, here are some screenshots from the power cable. As you can see, it has signs of degradation. The plastic around one connector has been slightly melted. So yes, the melting issues are real.
Enjoy the slow melt. One day a year or two from now you won't get display and you'll check your cable and see pic related.

RDNA5 is supposedly increasing the on-die cache, probably to help it (and the gaming consoles/handhelds) run more power efficiently.

I have a temp sensor glued to my picrel premium plug and it never reaches even only 40Β°C. How is this supposed to melt anything? All wires in the connector just need to have contact over a large enough surface to conduct power without heat building up. If you use poor quality adapters and bend the cord near the connector by closing the side panel of cases that are not wide enough (go big or go melted) then it's your own stupid fault.

The Nova board is still the best X870E deal there is. And I got it for just €247 last year. BIOS problems have been solved. If people still burn their CPU then it's because they crank up PBO Scalar and/or got unusually brittle silicon.

2070 super is roughly equivalent/negligibly slower than the 5050 but with significantly worse RT and Transformer DLSS/RR (you say native only but I feel like I should still point this out) performance.
On it being worth buying 40 series it has to come at a pretty good discount. The 4070 super is usually compared to a 5070 (with the 5070 coming in a bit faster) but you can see uplifts upwards to like 30%+ in a few games. Newer architecture is probably worth spending a bit more for alone.
If the difference between the 4070 super and the 5070 is only like $50 (which last I checked was the average) I would just buy the new card.
5070 could also be (probably a closer equivalent) compared to a 3090ti, faster (sometimes significantly so even before any rt or dlss stuff) at 1080p and 1440p, gap usually closed or favoring a 3090ti at 4k.
Don't hate on framegen until you've used it yourself. Not comparable to fsr and lossless scaling.

Could use this to kind of get a rough idea of where you are now but I don't see any current gen midrange card on here, feel like it's always getting harder to find things that I want through google :
https://www.techspot.com/review/3011-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5050/
5060ti or 5070ti I think would be the preferred picks if you care about ai (16gb vs 12gb) and don't want to spend $2000 but I have no idea how performance on that lines up. Everything I typed up above is looking at video gaymes only.
Can also check out 3dmark scores, but at some point they stopped being useful for amd vs nvidia comparisons and it tends to scale up the stack better than most video games ever will.

If an iGPU is enough, then great. I can order one of the many cheap and tiny chinese "mini PCs". But an iGPU isn't quite enough, not yet. Except the ryzen AI max, which is too expensive.
If I have the space for atx/m-atx, then great. I can put together a great value build with used parts. But I've already tried a cheapo matx case and it's just way too big, looks like shit and there's nowhere to hide it.
That means I want a compact console-style case with ITX, SFX, low-profile GPU and all that shit and it's so painful. It basically means paying out the asshole for parts that are just barely fast enough.

Explain. I can't figure out what that has to do with thermals. Isolating the PSU improves thermals. And the shroud isn't what limits you to two 140mm front fans, that's the drive bays you want. I'm confused.
It's a good case, btw. I have a CAD workstation in one at the office. Nice to have a disc drive just in case we need to read some ancient file or get something from a weird client on a CD.

The PC I'm looking at is Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RX 9070XT 16GB, 32GB DDR5 RAM.

Would that be a significant improvement on my current system, or would the improvements be marginal? I game on a 180Hz 1080p monitor, with a second 60Hz monitor for stuff running on the side.

I'm assuming your games can reliably hit 240+ FPS to take advantage of that refresh rate correct?

One of the QD-OLEDs is gonna be your splurge option with the cheapest being the AOC AGON PRO AG276QZD2 for $450:

For LCDs your cheapest option is the 24" 1440p@240 INNOCN 25G2S ($166) which will actually look sharper than the 27" models due to higher pixel density:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DSPLKKZV
For 27" models here's one that ticks all the boxes for $180 after coupon code:
https://www.amazon.com/2560x1440P-FreeSync-Compatible-DispalyPort-Speakers/dp/B0DJVZD56V?xpid=Ht1QKxZstzJlT
And another for $210:
https://www.amazon.com/CRUA-Computer-Supports-Freesync-Mountable/dp/B0F7KC4XGJ?xpid=Ht1QKxZstzJlT
Beyodn that they start costing upward of $200-300+ which is too expensive for their performance when 4K MiniLED/1440p OLED is about that price.

It might make it better for you. Just as the extra RAM in a 5090 makes the cost worth it to people who want a cheaper workstation card. But path tracing is still an edge case for most people. Last month I put together a pc that has 48gb of ram, a 9800x3d and a 5090FE. The 4k monitor I wanted to buy is on back order so in the meantime I am playing on my old 2560x1440p monitor.

One thing I am not getting so far. Everywhere you read "5090 is overkill for 1440p, you're a dumb shit if you play at 1440p with that card, 4k or bust".

Well my idea was that for the time being I'd just play at 1440p@120fps with maxed out settings, after all the card is a total overkill for this resolution, shouldn't be a problem right?

Well I tried alan wake 2, Silent Hill 2 remake, RDR2, AC Shadows, MH Wilds, Oblivion: Remastered and with the settings maxed out the 120 fps are not constant.

MH wilds has issues so ok, but the performance in other games, especially RDR2 a game that came out 6 years ago surprised me.

I ran some benchmarks and my results are in line with the numbers my system should be putting out but this has me second guessing whether or not cancelling my 4k monitor order.

My current monitor has a max refresh of 360hz but the card without DLSS/framgen doesn't get nowhere close that refresh rate with modern and even last year games.
Maybe I just picked up a selection of bad games for this to show up but right now I don't see why everyone calls this card an "overkill" for 1440p.

>My current monitor has a max refresh of 360hz but the card without DLSS/framgen doesn't get nowhere close that refresh rate with modern and even last year games.
last time I checked every modern game struggles to run 60fps at 1080p native with a 5090 so it all runs like shit
I guess the point is upscaling and it will look better on 4k res

seeing as its a budget build, i wont judge, however speaking from experience, the phanteks case, its side-panel locking mechanism being what looks like physical screws, thats a really, REALLY, annoying way to secure your case and it reduces the overall lifespan of the case itself once the screws threading wears out/metal socket wears, expands and degrades over time. You want a different method, any other method really.

I also prefer having a small ssd/m.2 for purely the OS drive+ all apps+drivers. 500-1TB up to you. Then additional drives as needed for various roles.

Otherwise the build is nicely balanced, although im always going to be wary of 1st generation cpus like the 7000 series, first on the DDR5 platform.

I'm a fan of the corsair K100 myself, its been a few years and has held up nicely. Although the wrist-pad faux-leather has worn out, and the first time i posted a battlestation selfie, i was asked about the 'cum stains' on it.

you're fucking retarded, you got no business trying to quantify anything other than your own poorfag cope and buyers remorse. Both are fine, the 14600K's stock boost clock is capped @ 5.3GHz, that's not high enough to be requesting dangerous levels of voltages.
i7s and especially i9s were vulnerable because the below-average bins could easily request over 1.4V (sometimes above 1.55V when it's not supposed) to hit their maximum guaranteed boost clocks.
i9 had a buggy enhanced TVB feature that didn't stop the CPU from boosting aggressively when it was thermally limited.

Phantom Spirit has one more heat pipe than the Peerless Assassin (7 vs 6).
Get the Peerless Assassin if you don't want the RGB fans.

Alternative brand, but be Quiet air coolers are less effective when dealing with Ryzen CPUs.
It's still overkill for a 7600X, they probably have better-sounding fans.
