I don't know if there is a difference. I know there used to be DVD-RW for the rewritable ones, if you had a drive capable of rewriting.

DVD-R is DVD without the ability to read the DVD
DVD+R is DVD with the added ability to read the DVD

The image shows an anime maid holding a gun with a 4chan-style post saying:

**"Explain the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R, now."**

Here’s the explanation:

* **DVD-R** (“dash R”):

* Developed by Pioneer (part of the DVD Forum).
* Uses **land pre-pit** technology to mark data positions.
* Has slightly wider compatibility with older standalone DVD players and recorders.

* **DVD+R** (“plus R”):

* Developed by a group led by Sony/Philips (not part of the DVD Forum).
* Uses **ADIP (Address in Pregroove)** for more accurate tracking and error management.
* Generally allows faster writing speeds and better error handling.

**Practical difference today:**
Most modern drives read/write both formats, so it usually doesn’t matter. Back in the early 2000s, compatibility depended on whether your DVD player or burner supported “dash” or “plus.”

In short: DVD-R is the older, more universally compatible standard, while DVD+R is technically superior in precision and reliability.

Do you want me to also explain the difference between **DVD±RW** (rewritable versions) the same way?

i always had theidea tthat they used different chemicals to make the cd layers and the laser needed to be able to fuck with either chemical to be useful for that disk. but idk why i thought that.
