Something similar to that kid. Except it was just JS, PHP and some languages for kids(think scratch). I didn't program anywhere nearly as much in "real languages" as I did in Expression 2 and others in Gmod at that age. The hundreds of hours spent programming, even in a meme language without functions, do teach you a lot.

When I was 10 I wanted a Super Nintendo.
I was given an Atari 800 XL and a thick book with pages of arcade games in basic.
I learned how things worked as a wrote and tested clones of Galatians, Centipede, Pac Man, and Gauntlet.
Eventually, about age 14, I got a used Atari ST and I kept at it. Eventually I got a proper PC when Doom was released. I spent the next 20 years obsessed with doom and making my own maps. I never progressed past Doom. Now I am 42 and I never progressed past BASIC and DOS or Doom. And I still play doom. And I hate the term “boomer shooter” so get the fuck off my lawn

>hello, squid here. its interesting to see the comments on this and i really like the stories of how you people have started programming, makes me feel like a fetus xd.
>i started at a young age, but it was really slow going. when i mention languages in my bio, its mostly things im learning and had to keep concise (stating my actual experience in rust would be very minimal compared to java). also, a lot of >the languages i deemed easy enough yet it was good for simple conversations so people understood about who i am.
>no, its not a resume. i just want likeminded friends :)

>as for people concerned about me being a computer individual at a young age, i had a tiny little thinkpad for so long and had arch on it before i was 11. i find learning as a really enjoyable thing, especially computers.

At 14 was when I started using /g/. Technically I've been programming since I was 12, but I started actually programming bigger projects that being projects with more than 1K LoC at age 18 (now I'm 20). For most of my time I've been doing POSIX shell and Python scripts, it was only relatively recently that I started learning some programming languages more seriously. Before that I thought I was the galaxy brain in person for having fiddled around in a few languages a bit, but never done anything actually non-trivial. Now I realize most of the time I should have stuck to two or three languages and git gud at them to a degree where you can confidently say you now them in and and out; this is a much more valuable skill than thinking you've seen everything for knowing how to write fizzbuzz in every language conceivable.
