Is VR a complete dead end of tech?

It always was. They keep trying to revive VR and 3D cinema but its always just a passing trend. Good movie/gameplay is lasting, gimmicks are a quick buck. Even true VR, that is matrix style full consciousness, would even be niche as you would still rely on the real world to keep your ass alive.

Apple didn't try to make VR, they tried to make "spatial computing" which was something nobody asked for or wanted. I want a full dive virtual world, not to wrap an iPad around my face and operate it via gestures.

This is not VR, and will probably fail for the same reason that AR goggles have always failed in the past, plus the fact that nobody with an IQ above 80 would consider using Facebook or anything else from a company which only exists to harvest as much user data as humanly possible.

I do not think the tech is dead. People are so addicted to their phones and a VR headset or AR glasses is an obvious extension of that.

Meta is still trying to figure out how to create empathetic, emotionally intelligent LLMs. Once that is achieved, and some creative integrations in their product line, I can't think of a more integrated experience with an AI significant other than through their glasses or a whole goggle setup.

No, retard. I was not making any claims about Apple whatsoever. I am pointing out how fucked Facebook is. Of course Apple gives your data to anyone in the government who asks. They can also remote scan/copy your device at any time, which is why encryption on an Apple device is totally worthless. Because the device itself will compromise your data the second you unencrypt it to access it, even if Signal wasn't an extremely obvious honeypot (it is) and worked as advertised (it doesn't) this would not matter whatsoever if you used it on an Apple device because of this.

it really isn't in its current state. i own a quest 3 and have used the vision, they really are still clunky experiences that don't feel natural or comfortable at all. maybe in the future the tech will mature for ready player one style goon pods, but as it stands they're little more than nifty gadgets. and i do like the quest 3 in theory, the tech is very cool and it does look very nice in certain games or like "big screen" watching, but it just isn't mature yet.

It's not the time for AR yet. It still isn't the time for dropping change in favor of credit/debit card. Problem is most of the world is not adapted for that, remember the era of Internet of things? Turns out is pretty expensive to keep it running, nowadays is kinda of an enthusiast or specific industry oriented area. We need more energy and connectivity infrastructure, all over the world, before finally getting AR normalized. However, it already is well adopted in robotics, independent AR capable robots running their own LLMs is going to become adopted way faster than AR.

I think it's more of a niche than a dead end. Zuckerberg tried to push it as if it was the next big thing and it simply isn't. It's more like an accessory for niche applications; like how a force feedback gaming wheel is an accessory for niche applications. They aren't dead, they still get made and bought, but in low quantities and for a niche audience.
Zucc tried to push VR into the mainstream and completely gutted the niche appeal in the process, VR is recovering but it will probably take 10 or so years to recover from the damage zuckerberg did.

Agree with niche, it has its uses
I think it's just the technology isn't there.
>Current displays aren't high res enough
>Headsets don't have the processing power to push amazing graphics, let alone these at much higher resolutions
>Setup is annoying
>Eye strain is still a thing
>People don't want to wear most of these headsets just based on things like weight or size
>Still pricey
>Software still limited to porn, sports and shooting games mostly
It'll take a bit for VR to be of consideration for most people.
Speaking of VR porn it's an actual chore. I have every video player (that's right, I paid for fucking video players) and it's a chore to get it to where there's proper depth but I'm also not closing one eye most of the time. It just feels too weird having to practically cross my eyes half of the time and fiddling with IPD offset settings and such.

Industry and military invest big into AR and TOC technology. Expect to see some break throughs in that area soon. Consumer devices aren't powerful enough for proper VR and there's not enough areas of application yet. I believe AI assistants will be a big part of AR in consumer applications.

The problem with VR is you can't disentangle yourself from it easily and it disconnects you from reality. What you imagine from VR is you have perfect control over your virtual body and the outside world just stops existing. When in reality it's
>wonky controls
>you're shoving a monitor in front of your eyeballs for long periods
>if the phone rings you have to take off shit to answer it

Apple released a 2012 headset in 2024: no controllers, no software, no compatibility and no comfort. It was a glorified marketing prop.
Metaverse was always a scam based on retards watching RPO and getting into speculative crypto, Meta stopped talking about it, because their foray into it has always been an embarrassment.

VR has been a target since the 60s and tech in the 2010s was enough to produce viable consumer grade headsets for computers followed shortly by completely standalone devices in the 2020s.
VR started with the sword of Damocles and the sword of Damocles has fallen, VR is here and here to stay.
The fact that every other market has essentially collapsed doesn't invalidate VR.

You are basing your expectations on the vidya industry from the 90s and early 2000s up until maybe 2009-2011. Honestly the only reason that VR isn't currently in as good of a spot as consoles is mostly just down to how absolutely shit Facebook is.

That 8k JAV VR porn out there mostly consists of videos where the actress is too close to the camera and you'll need to constantly adjust your settings because the distance basically will make you fucking blind. This is the biggest issue. There are a couple "high rated" VR titles but to me literally all VR games are boring as fuck and their biggest feature is just being a VR game, you could not be entertained by this crap if they were flatscreen.
The second issue is that it is just uncomfortable and tiresome. Nobody really wants to keep moving their bodies and flailing their arms with some shit uncomfortably pressed into their face, head or forehead.
I got into VR with the hopes of just using it as a literal 3d immersive monitor but pretty much all VR stuff requires you to use the god damn controllers, even modded shit. Oh wow you can move your hands in a 3d space and interact with physics based objects, so cool so amazing, congratulations, now fuck off. It gets boring after 30 mins and even more so when every game or every software does the same unimpressive stuff.
I have the top tier high end PC hardware. I tried native display port sets and Virtual Desktop wireless sets. All VR games look like shit and play like shit except for Beat Saber. I conclude that VR sets are reduced to being Beat Saber machines and that's all.
Just typing this post got me annoyed as hell, I wanted it to be good but VR just sucks, I have to accept it and move on

Because the billions are just a fake prop to entice a sufficiently steady stream of employees. The main goal is then to commit mass wage theft, meaning that actual payment is unsteady. Employees might be pressured into unpaid overtime, may see no wages for months or may even have to do more work just to earn wages that they've already earned.
The employees don't need to do any work, they just need to provide a suitable excuse for getting money from the source to somewhere else.

This is my biggest issue. I don't give a fuck if it takes too much storage or if the chinese know I'm beating myself off to asian women more than white ones, in fact I'm pretty sure there's a very specific chinese woman I know IRL that would love to know this fact right now, but I open a video up and suddenly my eyes are completely fucking confused, and I have to go into a menu and fuck with sliders and zoom in and zoom out, and suddenly the hoe just changes scenes and I have to set it again, and in this scene I'm sitting but in the next one I'm laying down, it's just unbearable. I can even keep up with the censoring but good lord I hate the cross eyed experience I get when things don't work out well. I don't want to close my eyes on fucking VR all the time, what's the point?

I don't think it's able to detect depth on videos like these so it does it automatically.
This is why I feel that even when they're not realistic, more standalone porn 3D games should come out. In those there's less of this bullshit. I don't like VaM, it feels to me like the GMod of porn games, but at least there I can move through that 3D space and I have no trouble. A video is just a video, can't do shit.

I don't know how that would be done. For instance this PCVR player, Virtual Home Theater, is more focused on getting good audio while watching videos over VR than anything else, but it has a plethora of features. It's pricey software for playing videos but the dev is open to practically put anything there people demand him to, if it's possible. Like the only reason that software is windows only is because he can't properly figure out how to make that shit work well on linux (it's not capable of using GPU rendering, although my decent Ryzen CPU is pretty much capable of doing 8k VR at 30fps from what I've tested).
Problem is not just zoom. There's some more settings to fuck with depth. In this software for instance, you get the option to change the IPD offset. If there was a quick way (through maybe some shortcut, pressing a specific button and moving the analog stick or whatever) to change the setting, it'd make things easier, but since there's a billion fucking settings in this software, you need to bring the menu up.
I don't think AI would be capable though of doing a good job there because IPD is a personal adjustment. I guess it'd need some proper face/eye tracking to acquire data and process it to input the right settings at the right depth. Sounds complicated.

I think the tech is cool but it's not quite there yet. VR headsets need to become more compact, I have a Quest 3 but I don't use it very much because I don't like wearing a big bulky thing on my face that fogs up after two minutes. A form-factor like the big screen beyond 2 is what companies should strive for, something easy to wear that doesn't get in the way.
VR also lacks a killer game that makes me want to come back to it. There's a bunch of gimmicky games that are fun for a while but I haven't really found anything that makes me want to come back to VR. The games that I do want to play are mostly VR-editions of existing games but they run like shit on my 7800xt. I know VR games have to render twice at very high resolutions but I feel like they shouldn't run as slow as they do.
Maybe if I get into VRChat but I'm not really used to voice-chatting with strangers.

Bros... this shit is killing me. I've been following VR news for years hoping shit would get to the point of usefulness.

A decade ago I had a 3D projector and Nvidia 3D vision. You plugged the ir receiver into your computer, turned the projector to 120hz, and put the shutter glasses on. It was incredible. Starcraft 2 felt like there was a giant hole in my wall and I was looking out over a battlefield. Diablo 3 worked great. Games didn't even need to be specifically designed for 3D. The software converted it automatically. The game world exists in 3D in your graphics card and it just gives you two cameras instead of one. 3D movies were hit or miss because fuckface studios wanted to cash in without doing any of the work. So you got pop-up book looking post conversions. Tron Legacy looked great (dogshit movie). Alice in Wonderland looked great (dogshit movie).

Why can I not just buy a goddamn headset right now, plug in a wireless receiver, and go lay on my back with a wireless keyboard and mouse and play stereoscopic games with zero set up? Nvidia discontinued 3D Vision. Shit has gone backwards compared to a decade ago.

After watching dozens of hardware reviewers I finally found a Quest 3 demo in a store. Shit was like looking through a goddamn toilet paper tube. It turns out every single shilling mother fucking one of them was lying to me the whole time.

I got laser eye surgery a week ago and being able to wear a VR headset was one of the bigger reasons.
