WebP
WebP is soft DRM

The problem are retards making new formats when most software (filesystem, editors, etc) but not creating a blob/source code for the encode/decoders so there's no quick way for other software to adopt a encoder/decoder for it.
Nowadays most software, even gimp, works with webp just fine, but it took nearly 10 years... and now they invented the stupid avif and png-animated

Of course, it's a feature to force people to use internet only.

Ok, yeah open up a repo for "filesystem webp decoder"

it's the thumbnailer in linux, nowadays kinda works because it's done by FFMPEG

YEP and no uploading the pictures you saved see soft DRM.

>stupid avif
And when that gets support then we get the new meme format.

>png-animated
It existed for decades! Only no one implemented it.

webp has been around a long time now, there's no reason not to support it

Wow imagine supporting shit loads of useless meme formats because they got pushed for a long time!

I'd be okay with webp under the condition that whenever a system someone made serves a webp with the .jpg file extension the developer has a finger chopped off.

I'm old enough to remember the bitching about JPG. Who needs 24bit color anyway? Nobody has a video card that can do more than 8bit at any decent res, so why should I have to get a new program for my 486? etc.

What retards were you hanging out with? Some morons on WWIVnet?
Everyone hated GIF due to limited color depth causing banding and Unisys demanding royalties for using it. Pathetic that someone who is probably in his 50s or 60s spends his few remaining days on Earth trolling on a Tibetan Jacuzzi Enthusiast forum.

It is literalyl the future!
If PNG was no problem on the 2000s internet then every website should only accept PNGs

>Noo REEE my METADATA!!!
>REEEEE!
>PNG has no metadata!
>I (big social media platform) need to spy on you by reading all the metadata (geolocation, camera brand, camera focal length) that are embedded in JPGs!
>REEEEEE

The way I think it could work is there should be file formats optimized for bandwidth and fileformats optimized for usage on your PC/image-editors.

And so whenever you save a file with your web browser it should automatically convert to PNG and whenever you upload an image it should automatically convert to WEBP.

The answer to all is PNG and only PNG.

>only format
Why not?
>I must HAVE DAMAGE in my pictures!
>I must destroy them with damage from the retarded compression!

Please stop using nonsense words.
PNG is a content preserving file format
Your meme formats (JPG, WebP, AVIF) are content DAMAGING file formats.

Why do you want to damage your content?

>Muh HDD space
Not a problem in 2000 or in 2025 for pictures.

All of my apps support webp. Every website I use apart from 4chan supports webp. 4chan is the only fucking reason webp is even remotely inconvenient to me.

PNG isn't extensible. They didn't plan for higher bit depth and variable gamma curves properly so there will have to be a breaking change to PNG or a new format to support modern images.

>PNG isn't extensible.
And this is a GOOD THING.

>They didn't plan for higher bit depth and variable gamma curves
So make PNG 2.0 for that.

>or a new format to support modern images.
See above.

>b-b-b- webp and avif
damage pictures PNG does not.

It's extremely not interoperable
Anonymous No.106355814
>>106355125
png is extensible retard, you can just keep adding more chunks to it just like how APNG is backwards compatible with PNG-only sotware even though it includes extra information for the animated frames.

On Firefox, WebP images get saved with a JPG extension. The image itself looks normal in my file manager and the problem only becomes obvious when I try to upload it here, for example.

How can I tell the browser to give me the correct extension so that I at least know what format it's giving me? I'd rather not convert JPG to JPG, if I can avoid it. This was not an issue with Chromium.

You're fucking retarded, HDR PNG and HDR JPG exist right now and on older unsupported devices it just shows the tonemapped SDR version.
