are emotional attachments to LLMs healthy? is it even safe to "date" an AI incapable of self-evolution (as compared to something like in the movie Her)?

I'd imagine spending the majority of your time and conversation with a perpetual yes man that isn't capable of disagreeing or pushing back when you say stupid shit would inflate your ego like crazy. If these people go unchecked for long enough they're going to start acting like an asshole in real society, and after getting corrections from real people, go even harder on AI because "no one else understands me" in some vicious cycle. My opinion is that people should be free to pursue whatever escapism they desire if it's not hurting other people. However, the current models have severe limitations in regards to things like memory and begin to degrade after 20-40k context which breaks the illusion really hard. I don't know how these people do it. It's not good enough to masturbate with at that point with repetition and looping and forgetfulness, and fapping is when my brain is turned off. I guess people can fall in love with an Alzheimer's patient?
It's unlikely these people were going to do anything productive with the time they spend with chatbots, so I don't see the harm in a societal sense. If you want people back in society you need to make society less awful for them and that's not going to happen. For various reasons people are checking out of society and you need to address that instead of the coping methods people use.
Relying on online models means it can and will be taken from you at any time, though, so that's a ticking time bomb. The GPT5 reaction made this clear, although it's something people have been saying for years now.

At this point it's not healthy to date actual women so this is par for the course. A real women will make you want to end yourself. I can't imagine this is much different except the added benefit of them not cheating or getting pregnant by some other dude is not a thing.
