We don't really have to concern ourselves with any high concept version of how to induce VR, most people will want a consumer version which just requires putting on a headset. We need enough people using it for the "making memories together" rhetoric to work, and permanent immersion really doesn't increase accessibility.

I'm pretty sure they used a near-term date specifically to avoid overusing sci-fi tropes. Tried to think of if we could literally just recreate the tech tree in series and I remembered how ridiculous the premise of season 1 actually is.
Pretty sure it was going to be a time paradox either way, since the demographic likely to develop any of this stuff pretty much spent those years... Watching SAO

My idea in my teens was just hacking FTL communication using telepathy if the universe really couldn't support any other superluminal mode of communication. The idea was pretty much, "we have to spend centuries on those generation ships anyway, it makes psychological sense to have advanced VR on-board" and the cultural edge of GS existence is just specially engineered hypersapients who network the VR realm from one ship to another (across vast lightyears) and kind of just embed into the VR core. At some point you would just become part of the ship, since I literally referred to them as "hubs" in my mind.
(I also didn't have a compelling reason to suspect telepathy couldn't exist, but it was more a "fuck you light speed enhanced interstellar communication" kind of thing for me.)
