Why is that ridiculous? There are already tech that's not accessible for civilians. The internet and smartphones are creating social problems, and Western governments are starting to make laws to limit access, following the same route as non-democratic countries. Having fully immersive VR technology would be the ultimate form of escapism. The last thing a government wants is a society where its people love fantasy more than reality.

for that to work like in SAO you will need a brain implant/port like in the Matrix/Neuromancer/Cyberpunk, you will need to paralyze the body (like during sleep) and give access to the 5 senses, but you will encounter many problems that need to be solved, the body rejecting the implant, the material that needs to be chosen carefully, the energy source, complications from inflammation to affecting the brain/synapses, etc.
So see you in 30-40 years when is done

I tried watching Log Horizon and couldn't watch second season. It's kinda cringe to me. Isekai is a little different. The character is part of the world and live and behave like a normal person. In the mmo genre the characters talk like gamers and it's cringe to me.

I don't think it's a good idea to require the body to be immobile/in a state of sleep becsuse that puts a hard limit on how long you can use it for(bed sores that coma patients have to deal with and sleep cycles being disrupted) unless we make further more difficult breakthroughs.

We could make something similar to full dive with today's tech with neural ankle and wrist interfaces where an artificial set of virtual limbs are created. So kind of like an octopus except you're not moving your real limbs. And a high fov display for your eyes.

All of this would not require a brainchip.
Anonymous No.106370569 >>106370675
We have multiple ways to read the brain already, it's the writing part that I think we still don't have a single clue how to do. Figure that out and you can essentially have your body go to sleep on demand and paralyze it while you do fulldive VR. I do believe writing into the brain is possible, we just haven't figured out a good way to do it yet. What I want to know about writing into the brain is to know if it's possible to have your brain react and perceive faster so the VR world can have a faster time ratio, I'd assume not, but who know what our brains are actually capable of.

I have calculated it.
The system would require manipulation of your brain's ability to lucid dream.
We have currently not even started fundamental research this area. If we started right now, the optimistic scenario would be that in 30 years, the first startups could pop up (like it took ~ish years from the first mass-scale electric computers to startup proliferation).
It will take 100 years to perfect the tech.
Ergo, this unrealistically optimistic scenario would yield 2150 as the earliest SAO-like point.
But we don't live in the optimistic timeline, we almost certainly live in a normal, regular timeline. As such, it's better to envision a point like 2200 as the more probable earliest point of flawless full-dive.

Yes, but keep in mind most of the characters you follow are not actually NPCs. In the SAO universe (they know this due to the state of their science) human consciousness is encoded by a quantum structure called a Fluctlight, and because it's not reliant on a biological substratum you can put it into a computer. Most characters of the virtual world have such a Fluctlight, which means it's not exactly ethically unproblematic if you kill 100 of them.

An interesting science fiction series is Altered Carbon.
In that show humanity found and reverse engineered alien tech that completely replaces the higher brain functions with a computer inside the brain.
The operation is done on babies and the computer replaces the brain.
This allows people to swap bodies with other humans, reincarnate, be the brain of a robot, be immortal with clones, have literal cloud backups of themselves, send their consciousness into VR.

We don't really have to concern ourselves with any high concept version of how to induce VR, most people will want a consumer version which just requires putting on a headset. We need enough people using it for the "making memories together" rhetoric to work, and permanent immersion really doesn't increase accessibility.

I'm pretty sure they used a near-term date specifically to avoid overusing sci-fi tropes. Tried to think of if we could literally just recreate the tech tree in series and I remembered how ridiculous the premise of season 1 actually is.

Pretty sure it was going to be a time paradox either way, since the demographic likely to develop any of this stuff pretty much spent those years... Watching SAO

My idea in my teens was just hacking FTL communication using telepathy if the universe really couldn't support any other superluminal mode of communication. The idea was pretty much, "we have to spend centuries on those generation ships anyway, it makes psychological sense to have advanced VR on-board" and the cultural edge of GS existence is just specially engineered hypersapients who network the VR realm from one ship to another (across vast lightyears) and kind of just embed into the VR core. At some point you would just become part of the ship, since I literally referred to them as "hubs" in my mind.

(I also didn't have a compelling reason to suspect telepathy couldn't exist, but it was more a "fuck you light speed enhanced interstellar communication" kind of thing for me.)
