It's a somewhat interesting question how much "legacy" tech we should be using. Pen and paper are probably still ok, but noone uses stone tablets even though they have some advantages over paper as well.
At some point we will probably have to ditch pen and paper and work on a higher abstraction level.

You just can't ignore being able to type faster, edit without an eraser, and sync. Handwriting is a larp unless you're doing some kind of meditative journal or drawing or whatever.

No writing implement is as cheap, lightweight and durable as pen and paper. And cheap beats everything. Trust me, it's not going anywhere.

Maybe they can, but entire histories and texts will become inaccessible to them until translated/transliterated.

More humorously,
>No, You have to understand, having kids bash their heads against a wall for years to attain subpar literacy IS the culture

Handwriting is neat from a psychological perspective. As you write, your personality and psychology is reflected in your handwriting. Thus by actively changing your handwriting you can change your mind.

To test this, force yourself to write in a girly, feminine prose. You'll find the next day after you've slept you do things in a more feminine way. You can also write angrily and see more anger in yourself. Weird, but it works.

What is particularly insane about Japanese is the number of "readings" kanji have, and then the re-use of pronunciations, so that you can't usually have just a character represent a word, it has to be paired with another character, often having the same meaning but different appearance, so that the word isn't ambiguous.
