Using verbiage like "try" or "attempt" can somewhat alleviate the problem, and so can instructions in the preset telling the model that not everything the {{user}} types is absolute.

Yes skill issue. Use lorebooks not summaries. AI doesn't need to know every exact detail of every thing you discussed forever, but you can simulate human memory with a model that has 32-60k context. Just take the time to write your own lorebook for details (You) think are important/want AI to remember. Write a short/basic plaintext summary and pick a keyword that brings up the memory whenever (You) think about it. It's really that simple.

Then write it in the summary? I put quotes in there if I thought it was interesting, or longer (500 token) summaries of events I think are important. The reality is that even when you write an entire book or dump some explicit lore, AI will rarely use or reference that info so you don't need all of that. It will tl;dr your verbose info into simple bullet points and you could have written those bullet points out yourself and achieved the same output.

the larger issue is that summaries cannot maintain personality stability at longer contexts, any bot based solely on a character card with no response rolling is going to be dogshit. after maybe 20 messages of tinkering though you can get it where you want it to be.

This kind of works. You invented the "memorizer" 2ch made a year and a half ago, I remember it being a part of anon4anon JB at some point. But in practice the result is... pretty mid, because:
1. Chunking is non-existent, summaries are too verbose and fail to capture the outcome of your scenes
2. You're asking for the event sequence, which the model still has to disentangle. As a result, it's just the chat history but worse: the details are already lost, but you haven't compressed the history to the high-level state.
There's a summarization method described in one of the guides which I've found to work better: ask for the final state instead of a event sequence, and update the summary each scene, instead of each message. Kind of a large and more slow info panel.

The only reason I'm considering using a lorebook in the first place is to manually toggle the backstory on and off depending on if I'm trying to do a serious roleplay or just fucking her.
I don't really like relying on keywords as I feel they're too hit or miss whether the keywords are going to appear or not, even in a situation where you're talking about something relevant to the backstory.
I think leaving it permanently on opens up more opportunity for {{char}} to more naturally reference it, which I think is kino.

good system prompts in chat completion will help with this.

another thing that might help, is using the author notes and summarizing stuff yourself, think like.
