How things are looking for Windows 11? Is there still a way to achieve fullscreen Metro screen, like Windows 8?

Can't manually configure tablet mode anymore, but 11 has some sort of a tablet experience that is automatically enabled for touchscreen form factors, including tablets and 2-in-1 convertibles
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/customize/desktop/settings-for-better-tablet-experiences
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-tablet-mode-on-or-off-in-windows-add3fbce-5cb5-bf76-0f9c-8d7b30041f30#id0ebd=windows_11
And it's got an overhaul - it doesn't look like what 10 had with just the bigger and simplified shell UX and the full-screen start UI with tiles, let alone 8

Coincidentally I was just testing 86box for emulation (it wasn't the new version though) and I will stay on Dosbox-Staging for now or if I need a virtual machine I'll use PCem.
86box is bit too unrealiable on my machine, some Socket5(Pentium 1) mobos can be ultra slow, some work without a hitch etc.
Mouse emulation is strange too, it's very visible in WinQuake for example.

Using the gigabyte control panel I was able to update my BIOS and my graphics card.
I am trying to play an old 10+year old 3D game. And my screen kept going black and back to normal multiple times.
At least the annoying words in the corner about activating Windows went away.
somehow.
So I'm at my wit's end and don't know where else to ask.
Since there's no way I'm paying $40 for NTLite just to unfuck Microsoft's issues, and DISMTools is halfbaked, what are people using to edit the Enterprise LTSC ISO made from a UUP dump to be able to actually rip out all the bloatware and spyware in there instead of just trying to disable it and hoping it doesn't get force-enabled anyway, because that's what happened with my last attempt after some past OP's propaganda went and LTSCpilled me
>"LTSC doesn't have all that same nagware and it's more easy to tweak and secure it so it doesn't force updates!"
lmao not when the thing automatically dumps Enterprise's Desired State Configuration shit in there and dumbass Windows just takes it as the signal to go ahead auto-configuring and running all that Azure or Intune or whateverthefuck device management using all the 'default' .mof's that came prepackaged in the ISO

>How have peoples experience with the W11 UI been?
My experience is that it is more responsive on modern hardware than an almost identical win10 LTSC install but if you have 2012 era hardware its not the go. It benefits a lot from large RAM, e.g. it will prerender the start menu so it will always show next frame but if RAM is low this will be free'd and rerendered on next open which probably won't be next frame on older hardware.
Also it actually has a heap of very useful features like tabs in explorer, scroll on volume icon, better window management, etc.
Newfag to this, how trustworthy is the iso provided for activation? I remember looking into this before but trusting the iso put me off.

It's all about the existence of the actual folder (not a symlink/junction/reparse point) and the proper ACLs set (limiting regular users to RX{GR,GE} perms, see it in icacls) that make the migitations work
Adding the hidden attribute just makes the folder not shown in an ordinary listing (like from dir, explorer if not configured to show hidden files)

my problem is that my mobo is too advanced and it doesn't have support for WiFi 6, so only Win11 lets me use wifi and other features from it. Linux is an alternative but there's just too much stuff that's not compatible that I need, and for everything else there's VM and even WSL or a good ol' VPS.
I'm a noob.
I was testing Ubuntu on live usb and realized it took about 5GB of ram when idle.
Is it because i run the OS live from the usb? would it go down to somewhere between 1 and 2 GB of ram when i do a bare installation?

For the longest time I've been using qimgv without complaints except for recently in that it takes about 5+ seconds to open images in large folders on my new external SSD. I tried Irfanview and it has this annoying little delay when going through videos, and Xnview also has video playback problems.

steam, lutris, etc does this for you automatically, you don't have to snatch the dependencies yourself when the installer script does it for you
and even if you just use wine as is in general, you can use winetricks to install most things you'd need to run your software automatically, all it could take is winetricks -q dxvk dotnet48 vcrun2022 vcrun2013 vcrun2010 vcrun2008 corefonts cjkfonts or something like that which is even much more easier of a process compared to microsoft windows

you should test both since the functionality may change depending on your hardware. i've had some drivers break on w10 but which work on w11 and vice versa.
start with w10 and if all your programs, games, workstuff functions just fine then keep using it.
if not, if you have brand new pc with the latest parts and very fresh drivers it might be smart to try 11 since it might offer better more stable experience.
so basically, try both, it's free anyways, then use which gives you less headache and works better

Maybe I'm crazy but I feel like someone asked the same exact question in a previous thread
If you're talking about feature updates that would make Windows 10 more compatible with future software, no
By design, LTSC releases NEVER get any feature updates. It will never happen because it would be the opposite of what LTSC is about
IoT LTSC 2021 will get security updates every month until Jan 13, 2032, but absolutely zero feature updates

Between NTLite and privacy.sexy you should be guided through 95% of anything relevant as far as Windows settings.
For drivers, SDIO is shilled a lot but its actually ass.
You want to check the chip manufacturer's website (This means Realtek, Intel, AMD, Nvidia, etc. NOT whoever rebadged the part such as Asus, AsRock, MSI, etc.)
If the chip manufacturer's website sucks (Intel for example) look up Mokichu's thread on the Asus forums, or look up the WinRaid forums.
People say go to the motherboard manufacturer's website for drivers. Thats fine if you like installing the January 2021 version when August 2025 is available.
Some random tweaks off the top of my head, not in NTLite/privacy.sexy:
disable 8dot3 filename creation
disable NTFS last access time update

Is Windows PowerShell worth digging into? I'm quite familiar with bash and the terminal in general on Linux, but I'm having to use Windows rn on a laptop of mine and I thought maybe I could learn something.
Also what's the usecase for winget on Windows? I love package managers on Linux, but I don't know about this one man.

Yesn't I recommend Powershell over Windows Powershell. But yeah it's useful, the problem is that it has a high learning curve though, because of it being object oriented, which creates confusion for people who are used to bash's string based way of doing things.

Go into the advanced settings in whatever plans you like to use and change the the setting from the 1m new default back to 20min old default. 1min is crazy, likely to wear out your SSD a bit faster, and it wastes energy on laptops.

I've done everything I could think of or search for short of a complete windows reinstall but this issue just won't go away no matter what. My last hope is that anyone here might recognize this issue.
At random moments, 5+ times an hour, I get these 100% disk usage bursts on my SATA HDDs if they're being used in any way (playing a video from them, running a program from them, anything that has even the tiniest amount of disk activity makes it start happening), and during these bursts it completely freezes whatever that disk is doing. This makes my HDDs completely useless for everything since every 10 minutes it will freeze whatever it is doing for about 10 seconds. Whatever is doing it does not show up in the resource monitor, the usual repair commands did nothing, installing a different antivirus did nothing, and I get no returns on malware, which wouldn't be likely anyway because I've had this issue since the day I finished building this PC and installed Windows 11 a couple months ago.
In the examples in this image I was doing nothing besides playing a video from my E: drive (which is the activity shown in the monitor), the exact same happens with the D: drive.

The drive has dropped out. Did you check connections? Are they SMART drives? Poor power supply can do that. You could also try test them from a Linux live iso to get an idea if its a software or hardware problem.

Did something happen to win11 LTSC? Any recent updates?
Everything was fine until 2 or so weeks ago. I keep having this weird slowdowns where explorer/desktop performance will tank for a few seconds(literally moving the cursor or windows like if the desktop is running @ 20fps).
When this happens, my wallpaper will turn black until I restart Explorer.
I'm also losing fps in games for no reason. Games will go from 144 fps to 80-90 for 3 seconds then back to 144.
I'm monitoring everything you can think of (CPU, GPU, temps etc) and I can't see anything wrong.

What's with the influx of r/edditors this past year?
It's been a thing in more recent years but it's consistent nowadays. I wouldn't mind if it was the occasional troll but they're too persistent to just be trolls.

Could be anything at this point: latency issues (see whether LatencyMon can determine something), third-party shitware (especially those loading on boot/login like OEM software you don't actually need, or utilities hooking on each process, especially error-prone explorer shell extensions), problematic drivers (memleak??)
>I disabled secure boot to test something a few days ago, I'll enable it again and see if the issue stops. If that fixes the problem, that's retarded af.
The secure boot update logs are a nothingburger - can't update the variables when the function is off in first place
Any other concerning stuff in the "administrative events" view? Have you installed something recently that might've influenced the stability issues?
Might want to review the situation from a task manager perspective, especially the CPU/memory views in the performance tab. Additionally run process explorer/system informer utilities

>schizo script like shutup10
It's the furthest thing away from a schizo script.
It uses Group Policy so it'll never fuck with your OS. Been using it for a while on multiple installs.
ShutUp10++ and WinUtil is all I need.

ShutUp10 uses the same registry entries that Group Policy adds but directly to the registry and not through GP.

scoop is mediocre. if you have winget, you should just use winget since it bypasses the weird indirection scoop uses and their weird config persistence folder thing.
this annoying piece of shit spikes to 30% cpu usage whenever i do anything with docker or run a python file. it basically makes my PC unusable cause my ide and docker combined use around 50-60% of my cpu and then this piece of shit takes it to 90-99%. i've tried all the standard approaches from browsing google but literally nothing prevents it from doing whatever the fuck its doing. my nuclear option is a github repo that will just remove windows defender from my pc but is there a way to get it to stop doing this without resorting to that? this is crazy frustrating

ionuttbara's Defender Remover is what you gotta use. You can disable it as long as you want with it.

I like that it keeps everything in the user folder makes it easy to transfer between installs. Winget doesn't have enough packages.

I guess. I don't disagree. I just think all of it is kind of shitty I guess. Wish we had NixOS for Windows at this rate (wishful as fuck).

this just started happening in the past few weeks for me. reading reddit threads the sentiment is basically that you have to either just nuke defender from your pc or accept that it's going to randomly hog 1/3 of your cpus capacity whenever it feels like it. im building a new pc in the next week so im hoping the issue just doesnt happen on the new system.

grim. I wish people would learn that AVs are a complete meme by now. Literally anything more advanced than file hash scanning seems doomed to fail. Never seen an AV prevent anything remotely malicious in my life as well.
sad!

I got hacked recently and it's about time again I go through the pain of the ass of reinstalling everything. Where can I catch up on downloading the entire catalog of security-only updates for Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2021? I only got this one installed.

What happened exactly? I'm curious. Did you install something nasty and noticed it when it was too late - usually defender won't even notice if something is packaged properly. This is the funny thing about all this security nonsense.

I'm thinking it might have been as one-time infostealer, token stealer, or something else because all my scans with on-demand AVs and my process/network traffic comes up empty.

I find that really hard to believe but if you are not using ublock with extended lists and tend to click around strange links.
I use porn websites and pirate games, but I'm clean. For my banking I'm using a separate browser.
I doubt anything could really happen just like that unless you run an executable.
Format your shit and restore a backup. Unless you're doing graphical work there's surprisingly little you actually need for a backup.
