They are probably there so wireguard itself can toggle them when necessary right? I mean sure they can probably just stay in the interface and always be on since they should be routed through the default route but that's besides the point. My concern here is the feasibility of routinely fetching the 4chan IP and its services and then have the addresses added to the interface. I don't know how complex 4chan setup actually is

I was forced to use them because back then I was using my Android phone's internets and that particular Android system picked an arbitrary IP from the 192.168.42.0/24 or whatever the subnet was.
So the idea was I could keep using DHCP *and* make systemd-networkd do routes based on that arbitrary gateway address. In any case it adds more flexibility even if your router didn't change IPs all the time.

100% CPU doesn't cause that. You're running out of memory or experiencing a driver fuckup. Do you have an OOM killer service?
back when i was younger, i heard trying to update your BIOS was a risky thing and that it could always fail and just leave your computer fucking bricked. now that i'm on newer technology though this is just a meme now right? like i've got a new motherboard, got a UPS, everything to keep from getting fucked by power outages

9950x3d delid using a clothes iron was successful, was actually pretty fuckin trivial. just cut the glue with floss, put a dab of thermal paste on the IHS, stick it facedown onto the iron, wait like 15 seconds for the solder to melt, pick up the PCB and the IHS stays stuck to the iron. clean the solder off the dies with some sacrificial liquid metal and install

I mean, it can happen. It's not very likely though. A lot of consumer boards give you redundant BIOS chips or at least a socketed chip so it doesn't turn into a hot air station fix.

with a quick and dirty pbo oc the 9950x3d pulled 270w in cinebench with a max cpu temp of like 74c, 47k score. My previous liquid metal 5950x would have thermal shutdown before the run even ended. \
Also i'm getting 90+fps in modded assetto corsa highway servers in VR now up from like 55fps with the 5700x3d i was running before

Why is that? Saving the image shouldn't modify the bits composing the image, or does it?

as gay as it is i'll probably end up rebuying ram and getting corsair dominators eventually to replace these vengeances, the rgb on them sucks and everything looks pastel vs bright and clear colors on the dominators. Yes. I explicitly ask *Get-FileHash* to compute using MD5. It returns a hex string but upon converting it into base64, I find that it's a different value from the one that 4chanX computed. It seems that saving images modifies the content of them in but I don't know in what way. I don't change the image extensions or anything like that.

First of all, make sure to download the original image by adding ?gknpsgng (any query string) to the url. Without it, 4chan will give you a slightly smaller image - it's not compressed, they just cut out a lot of metadata and such.
Then you need to convert the md5 hex value that you got from get-filehash to base64

I mean your best bet is probably to just try different stuff since every site can use their own blocklist, though when in doubt it's easy enough to make a quick protonmail account. just use whatever tools are available to you on your operating system, idk about windows.
I will say, though, that writing zeros doesn't always work because you don't have to actually write zeros if it's all zeros, your disk might just say "yeah all these, they're zero so don't bother actually writing that part" so it saves a ton on writes.
so writing zero probably not good enough.

I asked this a few days ago but only got a reply that said "RDP" which doesn't seem to be a specific piece of software
What is the most lightweight (especially in terms of memory, for the computer "casting"/sending) remote dekstop software for me to access and interact with one computer from another?

As long as you get the right BIOS it's not like it can randomly fail (assuming your computer is working properly, if it's unstable and it crashes then all bets are off). It can be dangerous with power outages though. If the PC is shut down while updating it can leave you with a corrupted BIOS and as such the PC will no longer work.
This can be solved by flashing the BIOS again. Some boards have options to allow this, like having a 2nd backup BIOS chip which doesn't get flashed at the same time or a USB flash feature which doesn't actually require the PC to be functional. If such options are not present you may need to flash the chip with some external flashing hardware, which most people won't have on hand.

I am curious, is this shit actually worth bothering with nowadays? I mean a 9950X3D doesn't have much OC headroom anyway, does it? How much do you really stand to gain in real-world use? Back in the day when I still bothered with major OC I could get over 50% higher clock on the CPU with enough cooling and the performance improvement was sizable from such a major clock boost, nowadays it seems like max clocks are mostly capped very close to what you get with stock boost on a decent cooler.

Hard to say about the sounds, I haven't used that particular model of HDD and they all make different noises. If it always makes the same noises and seems to work well then it's probably fine. Regarding the zeroing of the drive before use I suggest you curb your autism because that's literally a waste of time. That is seriously the best advice. If you actually want to overwrite the whole drive, then there's no shortcut to actually overwriting the whole drive. HDDs aren't particularly fast and a 8TB drive is going to take a long time. I don't know a program to do it in Windows off the top of my head, but you can probably just boot into Linux and dd random data to it if all else fails. I never used dban so I have no idea whether it works over USB, though I imagine it should since I don't see a good reason it wouldn't.

Average chink mice come with web-based software nowadays. Scyrox, Mchose, Gwolves, Wlmouse. For really cheap budget stuff, Attack Shark or VXE. I've also heard good things about Pulsar and Endgame Gear, they're not exactly chinks but I think they also use web-based software, do a bit of research.
Also the logitech software shouldn't affect the mouse's wireless connection or anything. Unlike razer, at least logitech's software, as garbage as it is, is still only used to rebind buttons and change settings and doesn't need to be installed otherwise. If your mouse isn't connecting properly that's a mouse issue.

That's a sign of interference, usually caused by things attached to your computer, but sometimes by other devices in your home. Operating the microwave oven is a frequent cause of interference.
To test this, connect the mouse receiver to a phone or tablet, grab the mousepad, and go outside to test it. If you're in an apartment, the stairs are usually furthest away from interference sources.
Also, try connecting the receiver directly to your computer with no hubs in between and see if this improves the situation.

Yes. Real life workloads vary a lot and synthetic benchmarks can never give a 100% accurate comparison. If you compare several metrics and several independent benchmarks it can give you an order-of-magnitude comparison, though.

It's almost certainly just because photoshop is not optimised for responsive text editing
When you type in a new letter, it has to do all the work of "rendering" it in your chosen font, with your chosen colours and effects etc. Now to some degree this is what all text editors do, but normal font rendering is quite heavily optimised because it happens absolutely everywhere. Photoshop's text rendering obviously doesn't reuse any normal OS facilities for this because photoshop has its own controls over how the text is displayed that wouldn't be compatible with normal UI rendering, and unlike something like MS Word, it's also not a central feature of the program. So my guess is that the pipeline to go from "this text object has these letters" to "here are the resulting pixels on the canvas" is simply inherently laggy.
So practically speaking you might be able to improve this with a better CPU and/or GPU (I don't know which one photoshop uses to render, and it's probably a mixture at best if not just primarily CPU).
>Is it because of my RAM being 16GB?
This would only matter if you were seeing close to full RAM usage, and also if you were then I'd expect absolutely everything on your computer to be laggy. If you have free space left in your RAM, it means that you aren't running out.

I know of some accounting software, e.g. beancounter. But if you want
>No actual money movement. Just tracking.
it might be too featureful and complicated for the simple usecase you want, so I'm not sure.
That said it also sounds like you can just do it with a trivial spreadsheet. Or even a calculator and a text file.
>put your budget number as budget.txt
>when taking out money, open budget.txt, subtract the amount you took out, save the new value
>you are now tracking the remaining money in your budget

This makes me wonder whether it's possible there could be a legal case behind this, for things like big utilities (like AC) which require an app that comes with its own T&Cs.
>product is advertised with a bunch of features
>purchasing and installing the product does not require agreeing to any T&Cs
>once installed, the only way to access the majority of the features is through the app which requires agreeing to invasive T&Cs and signing off on the manufacturer collecting and selling all your data
>if, at this point, you don't agree, you're left with a device installed in your home that you cannot use in the way it was advertised
For something like a smart TV you can just return it, but for an AC unit you've already paid the installation costs, and presumably ripping it out will cost even more. Obviously most people just shrug and accept it but I wonder if there's any legal ground for recouping the costs from the manufacturer for this.
I bet there's probably some devices, or they may make some in the future, where you don't even have basic control or any remote at all and an app is required for the unit to be functional at all, meaning if you disagree with the app's terms the unit is literally dead weight.
If I use internet over power adapters (building roughly 20-25 years old) how badly will the speed be affected if multiple people are using it at once? Will having 3 people using it at the same time cut the max speed to a third?
Is it worth using or should I fork out significantly more to get actual ethernet wiring put in?

The reason why you probably don't see that is those companies depend on a network of local dealers / installers and they don't want to jerk those guys around. Like I've sold / installed a small number of smart pool pumps, and that would be the most expensive penny Hayward ever pinched if some cantankerous old investment banker decided he's going to drag me into small claims for cost + fees because the shit doesn't work without a spyware app.

Do you mean running multiple pairs of these adapters on the same electric wiring? If so that does sound iffy, I've never tried it but it just sounds like it might not work. That said these adapters are cheap so I'd say give it a try, worst case you spent an extra $20 and can probably return and refund it anyway.
If you just mean plugging a switch into the adapter and having multiple devices connected to it (through a single powerline connection) then that's going to be absolutely fine. The max speed will be shared among everyone, just as it would be if it was a normal ethernet wire.
One thing to keep in mind is that like I said powerline is not a paragon of clean connection. It's fantastic as a quick patch for when you don't want to run wiring, and it's perfectly serviceable, but it's still a hacky way to connect. I wouldn't be very happy with powerline as a permanent solution long-term. But you can certainly start with it to get a connection right away, and then run proper wiring later when you get the opportunity, money and time if you care

I dunno, in big cities there's usually enough competing installers around the area that someone who decides to sue one of them will still have a lot of choice for future works, and also is it really always the contractor who tells the customer what device to use? Especially for some shit like a smart device, do people not pick the device themselves before asking someone to install it?
>some cantankerous old investment banker

Because specification committees hate consumers, I don't think thunderbolt specifies power delivery requirements, only data transfer rates and some auxilliary capabilities like the daisy chaining feature. So, no.
In practice
>charging
You should buy cables advertising proper power delivery. "Fast charging" i.e. 20-30W for a phone is going to be extremely widely supported, it's laptop charging (100-200+W) which is less common. Not expensive mind you, just needs to be explicitly advertised.
>or data
The standard says "get fucked", but in practice I think most cables advertise the speeds they can handle and most cables can handle high USB 3.2 speeds (10Gb/s or 20Gb/s). Obviously thunderbolt/USB4 cables can handle 40Gb/s, that's at least one specification that isn't a complete shitshow.
>or will work with my controller
AFAIK any USB-C cable should be compatible with any port and controller, the connection will just use the lowest common denominator.

Because there's more business, but it's also a lot more capital intensive to break into a big city market, and a lot of those businesses are multi-generational. If anything pissing those guys off is worse.
>do people not pick the device themselves before asking someone to install it?
For things like central air or pool pumps, no. Most people don't know the class of device they need and the installer has to give them options. If the installer gets burned on your smart products, you're not selling any.
>To be fair boomers are always first in line to gleefully accept any kind of spyware

I'm confused now, are you talking about the end user (who got a spyware utility installed) pissing off the installer contractor, or the device manufacturer pissing off the contractor by making it spyware and having the end user bitch after it's installed?
Because if I, as an end user currently living in a big city, call up some random AC guy to install an AC and then it turns out they shoved in some smart crap without making me read the app and service terms first, and I sue them or whatever, the only thing I'll have to worry about is if they sabotage my house (e.g. if hypothetically a court orders them to come and take it off for free and they're pissed so they fuck up something hard to find that will screw me over but will be impossible to prove). Otherwise I have no idea what you're talking about in terms of pissing off a contractor. Next time I'll just call in a different, unrelated firm, maybe even from an entirely different part of the city.
I also don't know what you mean by "scam" in this context (who's scamming whom?).

If I were you at this point I'd just do some searches, maybe see if anyone's built a frontend for that library specifically, and if not get an LLM to write you a thin wrapper around it (which should be pretty simple, as literally all you need to do is sort out the input/output to the algorithm, e.g. parse a list of input files, pass the data to the library call and save the results, or something like that)

So there's two things here: first, the page might be serving a downscaled version of the image.
Second, and I'm not completely sure about this, but I think browsers explicitly re-download images and stuff that you "save", and they do this basically so that websites get more control over the requests they serve. Which sounds shitty yes. I read this some time ago and in my experience almost any time you save something, you get a download progress bar, so it matches my empirical experience too.

It has a DPI button on the top of it- is there any way to make that DPI button behave like a normal button that I can bind other things to? Like the thumb buttons. I can disable it with the Logitech software but I can't bind it to anything in the games I play.
I have a PC that dual boots Windows and Linux Mint, and I'm on the latter trying to play games from the Steam folder of the former (in Program Files (x86)), but whenever I click "Play" it goes to "Cancel" and "Stop" then immediately reverts back to "Play" without even opening a window. I should note that the Windows partition is of course NTFS and I can read, write, and execute files from it on Mint just fine. How can I fix this?

For old thinkpads, they're pretty shit
For modern thinkpads this is no longer true at all, they're just different models
For example, the T14 is a slightly thicker plastic chassis, while the T14s is a thinner aluminium chassis. There are minute differences in cooling capability but these also vary between generations and amd vs. intel models, and the specs are otherwise identical. And to make it even more confusing, in the P-series, the P14s uses the same plastic chassis as the T14 (for example, that's how it fits an RJ45 jack) and there does not exist a "P14".
The exact differences will depend on the model and generation you're looking at.

>By default, EXIF metadata is stripped for captured images and only includes the orientation. Stripping metadata for videos is planned but not supported yet. Orientation metadata isn't stripped since it's fully visible from how the image is displayed so it doesn't count as hidden metadata and is needed for proper display. You can toggle off stripping EXIF metadata in the More Settings menu opened from the settings dialog. Disabling metadata stripping will leave the timestamp, phone model, exposure configuration and other metadata. Location tagging is disabled by default and won't be stripped if you enable it.

Based on this, I don't think it's possible on GoS's camera app. Such a pity.

Doesn't seem to have USB input, otherwise... fine?
The One+ has optical in, analog, and USB, so it doesn't need the source device to have optical out.
The advantage of USB is that it provides some feedback to the host, in my case the Raspberry Pi (Kodi) automatically switches to USB output when I turn on the One+, this isn't possible with optical. Also, you can adjust the volume from the computer, no need to use the remote every time.
I think it's classified as a "micro system".
I used to have a Yamaha RX-V371 AV receiver and there was no noise or hissing, it worked fine over optical.

I was the guy who commented in the other thread. It stopped doing it but started again today. What really worried me though is I opened up a private firefox tab a few minutes later, which then gave me another block, even though I didn't try and enter the site at that moment. Is Malwarebytes just giving a false positive? I just did a scan with it and hitmanpro and nothing showed up.

Any high level advice? My gut says just rewrite from scratch but a lot of people online say stuff like keep old code and just write new stuff in your style and it will more gradually become better over time. Also I haven’t fully sat down and gone through it line by line, just been running blocks in broad strokes, is there value in wasting a week going through everything with a comb? Using a laptop to mount a share over wireless with SMB or SSHFS. Same shit on windows/linux.
I disconnect wireless, go cable to same network and the mount definition is unresponsive, sometimes freezing up the whole system. Have to reconnect wireless to unfuck it.
On linux, forcibly rebooting fucks up my BTRFS drive requiring a manual fix.
Both the laptop's and server's network adapters are statically defined on the router, all three on different IPs.
This is inconvenient because I have to manually unmount the share and remount everytime I move to and from my desk, like 2-3 times everyday I'm home for the last few years.
What could I be doing wrong? Is this how it's supposed to be? Do you do a similar thing and what is your experience.

It's ultimately a tradeoff against time spent. If you have infinite time then by all means rewrite it all. Most likely you don't though so start with what exists and identify the pieces that are giving you the most trouble and tackle them in based on how much time you're able to dedicate to pure refactoring work
Also tests. Especially when taking an old, rickety system and refactoring/reimplementing large parts of old functionality, it is EXTREMELY helpful to have a set of tests you can run that confirm the behaviour of the system remains correct. These don't have to be "unit tests" in the strictest sense, but basically when you're refactoring something, you need some way to test a bunch of inputs and have known correct outputs and use this to guarantee that the new, replaced version continues to provide the exact same outputs given the same inputs.
If the old system is coded like shit I bet it doesn't have anywhere near proper testing, so I'd say start with adding a bunch of tests covering as many edge cases as you can. If you want 100% compatibility with the existing system, you can probably autogenerate test cases by just generating randomised input, taking the output of the system as "correct" and saving that as a test case, you'll probably want some sort of fuzzing tools/framework for this.
Once you have a command that you can run and it tells you "yes the behaviour of the system is still correct" it gets so much easier to just rewrite huge chunks of it at will and you can just get an immediate guarantee that you didn't break anything and can just swap in your new code directly.

A NAS usually means something always-online, that you connect to over the network. Something that you just plug in occasionally to copy over a new backup is just that, a backup.
Note that direct copying is not backing up - if for example you save a new version of a file, a set of mirror copies will all be updated with the new version, whereas an actual backup will store the new version AND the old version and allow you to revert back. Same for if you e.g. delete a file or a bunch of files - a mirror will lose the files too but a backup will allow you to restore them.
For your case you probably want a backup stored on a RAID1 setup, I recommend btrfs. Basically: as a unit, your "rack of HDDs" will have versioned storage containing incremental versions of your saved files; every time you plug it into your computer, it will create a new version and save only the changes from the previous version. This will be a proper backup allowing you to go back in time as desired. Look into something like borgbackup or restic. (Or btrbk if your main storage is also btrfs, but I'm assuming not.)
Internally, the rack of HDDs will be set up to use btrfs RAID 1, meaning the data will be copied over all HDDs. This is purely for failure protection - if an HDD dies, you still have a copy of the data.
You can set up the number of mirror copies, which doesn't need to exactly match the number of HDDs btw, e.g. you can have 4 disks with 2 copies so disks A+B are mirrored on disks C+D, you get double the capacity but obviously a bit less failure tolerance.
If you want to be really safe, you should also have an offsite backup, i.e. a third copy of your data which you don't store at home - in case your house burns down or something. This could be a copy of your rack of HDDs but sitting at a friend's house, or it could be cloud storage (that you only upload encrypted backups to, of course).

You need tests. There are different strategies, one is writing tests only for the stuff you are about to touch.
Another is to only write tests for the high level consumers of the libraries, so if a consumer breaks, you know that your recent change to the library is directly responsible without having to actually write unit tests for the library you're changing.
No matter the strategy, writing unit tests makes it extremely obvious where you need to refactor – if you're finding it very difficult to write tests for all the possible paths in a function, then it needs refactoring.
Pic related is good reading.

I think unit tests SUCK and behaviour acceptance tests are much better
By all means unit test if there's some specific computation happening, but there's always a huge portion of code that's mostly glue code between various components and unit testing everything, mocking any other parts of pipelines etc. is usually more trouble than it's worth

what's the point of secure boot?
>prevents attacker from inserting/using unsigned code during boot
how do you get unsigned code inserted during boot?
> tamper with the uefi boot files
which requires either root access or physical access to boot drive... which implies
>someone has root access, or
>someone has physical access
in either way, you've already been fucked, right? especially if you're signing your own boot images and your key lives on your system, then the secure boot is compromised. not to mention you're already fucked with root access anyway.
a physical attacker can simply reset the CMOS and your UEFI password and change the keys.
tl;dr is there any reason to sign your own kernel for secure boot? i'm thinking no. just lock your shit up, right?

We shall see, I haven't done a legit overclock on it yet but I'm already seeing decent results, 47k cinebench @270w and max core temp is like 74c. 9950x3d has the Vcache under the die so it doesn't really limit the voltage/clock like it used to. I had a 5950x clocked to the edge of it's life and it ran great, am hopefully gonna do similar with this one over the next couple weeks. I want to get into top 100 3dmark leaderboard for my 9950x3d/5090 combo within the month

I tried to use these exact adapters to avoid running a cable, but they would just auto switch to 5ghz because it was faster than the power line Ethernet backhaul so there was no point. I ended up snaking an Ethernet port through my a/c vents to get Ethernet down toy basement goon cave

I migrated my boot drive, fucked around with disk partitions, and now the .lnk file for my steam in the taskbar's context menu is broken, it displays as the default white paper, and when I click this icon in the context menu it does nothing, Shortcuts on my desktop still work, so does the start menu shortcuts, just not this specific taskbar one

but I managed to fix it in the end, I knew I had to find a specific shortcut hidden in some folder in order to correct this issue.
Uninstalling and Reinstalling steam didn't work, at the end it was hidden in AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\ImplicitAppShortcuts

This gen I'm not sure, the AMD cards are pretty good for the price and I don't think the intel ones have caught up

I have had a problem for years now on windows where sometimes when I boot up windows the start key does not function and any time I change which window is active, my music player, foobar, will change the track it is currently playing. It will use the weird windows universal volume control as well.
I have tried different keyboards and changing out ram in the past. For the longest time I thought it was a broken windows install. Recently changed to a completely new computer entirely running a clean install of windows 11 ltsc. the only programs I installed so far were the amd drivers, librewolf, steam, honeyview, mpc, and open office. havent even installed the music player and it still does the windows key thing.
there are other harddrives with music, movies and games on them but I do not understand what I could possibly cause this.
It has been difficult to troubleshoot because it only happens on maybe 20% of startups and almost never happens after quickly shutting down and rebooting.
my current guess is that it has to do with the bios but I dont what I would be looking for. and why would I have theis problem on two completely different brand motherboards for different socket cpus.

Could there be something else plugged in that could be acting like an input device? E.g. have you tried unplugging or switching your mouse? An external numpad or macropad or gamepad or something? Any game controllers that happen to be plugged in OR connected wirelessly, or maybe a wireless bluetooth sitting in a drawer that wakes up from standy and autoconnects sometimes? Any USB devices in general that might have any reason to act like an input device? Some old chink dongle connected to an internal motherboard USB port that you forgot about?
Make sure you don't have any wireless shit that might be connecting, and then unplug all your other USB devices internal and external. And switch your mouse out for the most basic cheapest office mouse you have in your house (if you're already using a basic one try to switch to a different one just in case). See if it still happens.

Microsoft gets no control of your software, read about public key cryptography before posting your opinions. Secure Boot does not require Microsoft keys, you can erase their key and install your own (or Canonical, or RedHat keys).
You keep blabbing about rootkits and physical access but SB doesn't deal with them, it merely validates that the stuff you boot and run has been signed by a trusted party (or yourself). Nothing prevents you from signing a rootkit, and Microsoft routinely does so. Again, you can erase their key in 5 clicks.
SB also deals with measurements – you can use PCRs from the TPM as proof that the boot chain hasn't been tampered with, and obtain access to remote resources based on this proof+authentication (say, access to Remote Desktop for remote employees).
Measurements can also be used to safely unlock encrypted disks without having to type a long ass passphrase and still maintaining strong security.

https://aoc.com/uk/products/monitors/24b2xhm2/specification
do I understand correctly that one of them cannot be VESA-mounted? It doesn't say so in the specs (first link) and I have it with me so I can see there's nothing on the backside. The other one says it can be mounted in the specs, but I don't have it at hand.
But a wise man on /g/ told me that every modern monitor supports VESA mounting. It was made in 2018 and it got none.

It all depends on your threat scenarios. Old workplace had armed guards and some doors were rated in terms of their resistance to heavy duty angle grinders. Still, the contingency plan was to smash as many HDDs as we could before the main doors failed, so none of the racks had doors installed.

digital and physical computer security is basically an onion with a dozen different layers. many of the layers directly compliment each other, but when judged individually, they seem weak/pointless.
For example, I work in enterprise IT and the number of techs (including directors) who don't understand Bitlocker is staggering. But tbf it's not like it really matters that much unless you're the one who's responsible for writing policies.

Sounds like a good drive that kicked the bucket. It happens, and flash storage usually becomes read-only when it dies.
The fact that you stopped the transfer is not the cause, it must have died while writing the data. It has reached its natural end and this would have happened anyway. Those small drives get very hot sometimes and heat isn't exactly good for them, but that's on manufacturers to implement safety measures which limit it's speed when the temperature increases.

To some extent, yes. HDMI has many more features (sound, Ethernet, 4K, 3D, CEC, DRM) but the basic video modes are fully compatible with DVI-D, you only need a passive adapter to convert the physical plug.
Some DVI connectors also had analog pins that don't map to HDMI.

Remember that hard drive manufacturers use decimal storage capacities. So "4TB" = 4000 "GB" = 4,000,000,000,000 bytes. Divide by 1024^3 and it works out to 3725.3 actual GB.
The second drive is a "4096 GB" drive for some reason. The GB is obviously still decimal so it's 4,096,000,000,000 bytes, again divide by 1024 three times to get 3814.7 real GB

Step 1: buy a cheap device to run Home Assistant. A raspberry pi is good enough, but you can also get a minipc, or any old laptop that you want to run as a server
Step 2: for light switch automation, you should probably look into low-power stuff, like zigbee. You'll need a dongle for your HA server and it'll connect wirelessly to zigbee devices, and you can do some research to find a good smart lightswitch that's compatible with HA without requiring any online connection.

I haven't looked into it very much but from what I've heard it's just for device attestation. So if a super botnet app that requires a Google Approved(tm) android installation (commonly seen in shitty banking apps), it will now fail if you have unverified apps installed. In the exact same way how right now rooted devices usually fail the google checks and similarly can't run some banking apps and stuff.
I'm not aware of google having plans to outright disable the ability to install inverified apps, but also even if they do it will most likely be patched out of most custom ROMs.
>sideloading
BTW, it's not about disabling sideloading. Every app APK requires a developer signature which currently basically ensures that all updates you install are from the same developer you originally installed the app from, but that's it. (And Google Play apps are signed with Google's own keys.) As far as I understand it, this new thing is going to require every developer key to be registered with google - so you won't be able to just make an app, publish it on github, generate a keypair for yourself, sign your APK and have signed releases; instead you'll have to register with google and probably pay a fee, and then you can use google-approved signatures (somehow) and then publish your app wherever you want.

Exactly
>Is there a hardwired version of this?
If you want a wired connection then you basically run an ethernet cable. This doesn't require any special protocols or anything - but I haven't really heard of this being widely available in smart devices, because ethernet jacks are bulky and because running ethernet wires to every light switch in your house (and every lightbulb/light fixture, etc.) is not something most people are willing or able to do.
Powerline exists (basically ethernet over electric cables) but the adapters are also pretty bulky and it's not super reliable.
If you find a smart light switch that's got an ethernet connection AND actually want to run ethernet cables to your light switch, then go for it. But usually this stuff is going to be wireless, using wifi or zigbee. And of those zigbee is just nicer because the devices tend to be less botnet out of the box (wifi devices expect to be connected to your main access point and you might need to set up specific firewalling/filtering to prevent them from being able to access the internet, for example, on top of wasting more power and adding extra traffic in the wifi spectrum).

Unfortunately no, and it's a great shame. The big advantage of Zigbee is that it's completely incompatible with Ethernet, so it would be great to get a wired version of Zigbee where both power and communication happens over a pair of wires.

Ethernet is easy to isolate, though. I guess wifi is also easy but you need a separate access point and it starts taking up channel space from your normal wifi. With ethernet, just configure a separate network on the port you connect it to, and disable routing between them.
>Fuck changing sensor batteries every few months, buying 5 different types of batteries

NTA but because a LED is minuscule, extremely cheap, and trivial to add somewhere on the bezel, while your pic related is a gigantic component that would need a huge window somewhere on the phone case. It's true that it would drain less power than a LED, but only infinitesimally so, because one tiny LED already draws a practically negligible amount of power - on a phone which is in regular use, has working wifi and cellular radios and runs its screen and CPU for non-negligible amounts of time per day, the notification LED will effectively not drain any noticeable amount of power that would affect the charge levels in the battery in the timescale between typical recharge cycles.
A better example from your side would've been something like an e-paper dot able to change from black to white (or maybe even colours) without any persistent power draw, but the effectively negligible power drain of a LED is still worthwhile for the benefit of being able to see it in the dark.
