Ad Blocking in Smart TV?
I have recently got my hands on a smart TV from TCL running Google TV. After setting it up with channels and a Google account. I started watching YouTube, but there are a lot of ads that make the watching experience painful. So I booted up my Linux machine and installed Pi-hole on Docker and set it as the DNS server for the TV. But the ads unfortunately persisted. I then tried to set the DNS servers as AdGuard which also failed. So I come to ask you guys: How can I block advertisements on my TV without paying for a YouTube Premium subscription? Is there perhaps something I am doing wrong with Pi-hole? Maybe there's some blocklist or some setting specifically designed for smart TVs? I also heard that ads in the YouTube app for smart TVs are served from the same domain as the content so it's harder to block them. In any case I request your urgent help with matter and offer my sincere thanks in advance.

as you correctly said youtube app gets ads from the same youtube.com domain as the videos. so blocking merely by dns is not possible.

YouTube ads are served under the same domain as the video stream, the different video streams and ad streams are identified by random hash values. You need to configure a blacklist entry for every single hash value which could be quintillions.
But I myself am looking for a solution if there is any type of ad blocker which can be installed on my server which processes every single bit transferred over the internet before it reaches the network with all my devices like PC, Laptop, TV and Smartphone. Would be nice if there was a solution for a VPN under the same premise.

You use SmartTube instead of the YouTube TV app.

YouTube you need to use a device that you can custom certs on so you can do a mitm attack and strip the ads directly.

Could be worse. Could be a smart tv that doesn't run Android os.

Install stremio+torrentio, smarttubenext, Plex call it a day. If you can't, use Chromecast, shield, htpc etc

Has anyone flashed a custome firmware to their smart TV yet?

Either way, I just connect a computer to my TV and run everything through the machine. I don't actually use the TV portion of the TV because it's an objectively worse experience than using a terminal. If they made a 70" monitor if comparable quality I would just switch to that.

I tried this with my Samsung Smart TV and the ads also got through. Then after a while my TV would say it wasn’t connected, even though it was. It refused to even function until it could reach out to Samsung servers. Fuck smart TVs.

i would prefer to just block my TVs internet and instead connect some kind of linux box to it and open youtube etc via browser with ublock. whats the usual solution here? raspi seems to be too weak for some stuff and desktop pc too much

>falling for the (((smart tv))) meme
the best you can do is rip out every component that lets it go online (and spy on you and your family) then just use it as a monitor with any kind of computer, watching yt in a browser with uBlock Origin

plug a small pc into the tv with an hdmi cable anon

install adblocker then watch youtube

there is no reason to ever use the 'smart' features on a tv

What uBo does is significantly more complex than only blocking at the DNS level.
