If society felt strongly about life sentences or the death penalty for child molestation, then there would be pressure to change the laws. In fact, it would be the easiest thing to change since these crimes target children. There is zero such pressure, meaning (almost) no one gives a fuck about child molesters getting out in 5-10 years.
