Laptops
What are your favorites?
I'm shopping for one for mom and one to replace my 12 year old ASUS.
It seems 16GB of ram is the bare minimum these days.

A lot of people are recommending Lenovo and Acer.

No I'm seeing decent stuff between $300-$500. I don't need a gaming laptop and my elder mother certainly doesn't either.
Asus Aspire looks promising.

You can run 8GB RAM comfortably for browsing and code/document editing, even on something like Windows 11. You only need more if you are running really resource intensive processes like gaming, video editing, AI generation, etc.

I'm running Debian+LXQT on an 8GB chinkbook and sit at 2.5GB used RAM even with a bunch of Chromium tabs and random applications open. I could have gone with 4GB RAM and been fine.

Interesting. Redditfags were saying 16 is the bare minimum. I wonder how many paid shills patrol that site.

Walmart sells a MacBook Air M1 for $599 right now. Consider it seriously. The M1 chip is 5yrs old yet in a package that still beats 2025 laptops. I have a 2025 Lenovo L14 from work and it is worse than the 2020 MBA M1. If you got a little extra money go newer of course.

She probably doesn’t even really know how to use a laptop so she’s a perfect candidate for a MacBook. It’s great.

are there any laptops with e-ink screens yet? I don't care for colors, I just want a portable computer with a physical keyboard that I can actually see in sunlight.
>why
because a desktop PC can do everything else, better

With Reddit I'd say it's less paid shills and more uncritically parroting the socially acceptable opinion. 16 is the safest option you can say to not have people downvote or browbeat you for saying too high or too low a number.

It's the optimal number socially, but not the optimal number architecturally (which depends on your use case).

Your laptop uses RAM for iGPU so you have way less than 8 GB compared to a desktop.
If you don't see the use case of, say, running Minecraft with Youtube videos playing in the background sure.

Power mods being political shills has nothing to do with users recommending RAM. But yeah Reddit has multiple problems as a platform.

I was accounting for this. I'm at 2.5GB of used RAM including the RAM being used by my iGPU.

>If you don't see the use case of, say, running Minecraft with Youtube videos playing in the background sure.
I said gaming was one of the things that would require more RAM. Meant to add virtual machines to that list.

Just get her a chromebook if she's the type to only browse websites and not download stuff. Cant run .exe files on em natively but theyre cheap and "modern" and come built in with their own version of linux called croutini or smth. What I personally did was get linux space, get wine and have my own windows vm. Idk if ur mom/ my sex friend cares about that stuff tho

I don't need to use a laptop for gaming anymore. That's what the desktop and steam deck are for. Just watching youtube, my t.v. and movie archive and editing videos.
