Nothing, it's business as usual. They purposefuly made an ugly design that will persist for next year's iphone as well until they redesign the 20th anniversary model with something very well designed with a higher price tag to match

apple doesn't have a design department. it's a functional org. the most apple got is a "Senior Vice President Design, Watch, and Health" and that guy isn't a designer.

Williams had no background in design at all. Apple’s design teams reporting to an operations executive makes no more sense than it would for Apple’s operations teams to report to, say, Alan Dye. Well, maybe it made a little more sense than that—having design report to Williams sort of felt like a way to give Williams experience across the breadth of the company in the case that he ever needed to step in to replace Cook as CEO, either temporarily or permanently, as Cook was asked to for Jobs.

There’s really nothing more to design.
It’s a very roughly 4x6 touchscreen computer with a front and back camera.
There’s only so many ways you can arrange things.
They go back and forth on the iphone 4 square edges every 2nd generation.
Everything else isn’t a design decision it’s a technical challenge to be solved.

I’d be happier if the made the battery trivially replacable and returned the headphone jack.
