Sorry, but when ONE (1) person can decide that Persons X, Y, and Z I follow on server A, B are "bad' because Person A on Server B and Person B on Server A are "terrible and I don't want to deal with them" and block Server A/B, that's not good design. That's dogshit user experience.

Same reason a lot of FOSS software isn't picked up, I'm not going to deal with bullshit of GIMP/et. al. when Photoshop "just werks" and doesn't require workarounds.

Most of the popular instances are not branding themselves as being Mastodon-based. They exist to fill a niche in social media free speech like Pawoo. It's like for free software, the most successful examples don't use their GPL license as their main selling point, it's just a bonus.

There are some minor technical flaws that can be fixed, and some major social ones that will take a bit more effort. Also its worth noting that Mastodon is not alone, and that Pleroma and Misskey servers are compatible parts of the activitypub using "fediverse" alternative social media projects, so if you don't like one thing about Mastodon but prefer Pleroma, Misskey etc.. that's fine; many focus on Mastodon because it was the first 'fediverse' platform to gain real prominence

Overall it is pretty solid but there is one major issue I want them to fix - remove the highest level of defederation. That's it. It should NOT be possible for a server admin to block their users from interacting with whole other servers and their respective userbase.. The next level down, which basically removes media and posts from any of your public Neighborhood/Universe feeds effectively does the same thing - getting a certain server's content out of your public areas - without stoping your users from going there or interacting with that server and its users, content etc.. if they desire. Let your users make their own choice- you make the rules for your house, but permit your users to go to other houses where the rules may be different if they so choose. There are some other smaller issues and optimizations that will be improved with more time but the above is a major issue of structure and moderation which leads to

Some of the biggest issues are node admin faggotry breaking with the federation. The point of a federated platform like Mastodon et al, just as XMPP and Matrix is that you can sign up or make your own server and interoperate with others. Asshole admins blocking servers for stupid culture war reasons, often with"fediblock" lists of preemptive problematic bullshit, not because of actual interaction, is shit that affects users. This should not be the case. The Fediverse has promise, but we need more servers w/ oldfag ethos admin

It's pretty comfy if you self host, but I wouldn't want anybody else controlling who I federate with.

I run a server that I share with a couple of friends in meatspace. I think that's the way to do it, but self hosting is difficult enough that most people wouldn't be up to it.

This is not a problem with Mastodon/Pleroma/Misskey et al. Federation allows interoperability, you SHOULD have access to the whole network. The problem is server owners/admins who fuck this up. Nobody has a problem with only putting the servers your community works well with on your "neighborhood / universe" feed - it helps with discovery , same with keeping certain shit out of your public areas (ie you're a general server, you don't want giant onlyfans and camwhore ads everywhere ), but you should not stop your users from the general server from individually following the camwhore of their choice, or of browsing switter (a real thing at one point anyway not sure if not - basically when Twitter kicked the onlyfans and actual escort/sex workers, FOSTA/SESTA killed backpage and craigslist, they moved and made their own instance) and seeing all the escorts they want.

Think about it a bit like XMPP, Matrix , or Email. You can sign up on one and communicate with those on other servers. There are always tradeoffs wit centralization vs decentralization (including its best variant, federation) vs distributed (the latter being absolute garbage for anything similar to social media because it inhibits discovery) but since the modern social media era all of the good "oldfag days" of the Internet and Web has been negated in part because of over centralization. Everyone crammed into someone's walled garden to be monetized etc.

If the point of the "Fediverse" is to be an alternative to major proprietary centralized social media projects , and do so with better privacy, security and other features that is worthwhile but it does require people to think a little differently than what has been pushed at them for the past decade or two, even in small ways.

I don't fully understand how fediverse works myself, but admittedly I don't use social media platforms that much.
This is probably why Bluesky took off so quickly and easily, it didn't have a lot of complicated things going on within it. It was more or less a Twitter/X clone created by those who were on Twitter. (although, it looks like it's losing traction these days)

They don't need to speak to everyone on the same platform, just the same bubble. If you have 10 servers that all talk to each other regularly, you have one community. Take down one server, people migrate to one of the others and you have zero fragmentation.
