Don't buy 2.5GbE, it's a temporary holdover until low power 10GbE hits the market (later this year or early next year).

The PHYs were announced like 6-8 months ago, finished product designs were shown off at a trade show in late July. It's happening kiddo.

>>106381501
So 2.5GbE PHYs are shit because they only have consumer applications, anyone with actual money just buys established 10GbE PHYs that had the kinks worked out a decade and a half ago from hardcore datacenter and enterprise users.

2.5GbE PHYs are riddled with bugs because no one gives a shit if a consumer has bufferbloat due to terrible queue/buffer management.

It's happening
But it's going to be awhile before mainstream vendors actually give it up for what it's worth.

Once you sell a consumer a 10G NIC, 10g switch and a 10g capable router, that's it. There is no going faster in a consumer friendly form factor. Consumers likely aren't getting 25Gb or 40Gb. Getting 40Gb over copper is hard enough, much more trying to do it over 100ft.

It would be a cold day in hell if they ever market fiber for general networking to consumers because it's a necessity over 10G

>Consumers likely aren't getting 25Gb or 40Gb
Not even enterprise customers get 25GbE or 40GbE over copper.

The 25GbE and 40GbE standards were submitted and accepted, but not a single hardware vendor has ever actually made a PHY, even as a demo.

They're paper specs.

I'm aware, that's why I said it's unlikely.
25/40Gb over twisted pair would never have even made sense for enterprise.
Atleast where I work the last serious used of 10GBase-t anything was a little less than 15 years ago and even then they didn't use RJ45.

the point of 2.5gbe is that it doesn't require cat6+ cable. if your house is wired with cat5e that's the best you're getting

There are DAC cables, but those are too short for anything that's not right next to each other.
Anonymous No.106383004 [Report] >>106385754
>>106382673
Yeah but I wouldn't really consider an SFP/QSFP DAC cable, even if copper, to be the same as RJ45 twisted pair copper used for normal Ethernet. Like yeah, it's technically copper, and yes it might use ethernet frames, but it's hardly what a consumer would consider to be ethernet.

Nah i've got 10gbps runs using CAT5e.

Just don't try to go more than like 50 feet and you're generally fine, unless you're using ancient CAT5e, or super cheap chink CAT5e.

DACs are a thing. Copper is fine (and arguably even preferable) over short distances. The majority of my rack is done with copper, and I only use 25 and 40Gbit nics between machines.

I do agree that you won't see residential stuff jumping away from ethernet anytime this decade (and probably the next).

>>106383004
Ahh I guess you addressed that. Well I'll leave it in the message regardless.

What's going to kill any attempt to transition off of ethernet is PoE. PoE is the backbone of fucking everything these days. Consumers are buying PoE cameras. Everyone (including people building luxury homes) want increasingly hungry and ridiculously fast wireless access points. Some of the cameras have lights that can make the camera draw upwards of 20 watts now. Some of the newer access points can draw upwards of 40 because they're either trying to run 3 sets of 4x4 MIMO antennae, or doing absolute clownfuck stuff with directional equipment and running dozens of antennae to filter out background noise.

Ubiquiti's AI PTZ camera is over 50 watts PoE.

>Some of the newer access points can draw upwards of 40
Similarly, ubiquiti's highest end AP (E7 audience) draws over 50W PoE as well.

You mean never ever. Enterprise already moved to 25/40/100G so they have no reason to make new 10GbE chips, you'll have to wait until Realtek makes a new buggy as fuck chipset. They only just recently made a 5GbE one.

Anonymous No.106389516 [Report]
>>106389462
NVME SSDs do 600MB/s writes regularly, 2.4GB/s reads as well.
That's 5/20 Gbps in network terms.
Use 4x2TB SSDs in RAID0 PCI-E 16X cards for ultra-fast disk bandwidth, or even RAMDisks.

Not saying any of this makes sense, unless the systems your driving require large data-sets to be worked on from every (e.g video editing/encoding), for a home setup, but the prosumer options that play in the lower-end of magnitude of the professional corporate options, are definitely there.

it just doesn't seem like a worthwhile investment, having to upgrade the all the switches and NICs involved, just to get 2.5, which is already slow in ethernet standards, especially with the low power realtek 10GbE just around the corner. if gigabit is seriously not enough for you, then it won't take long for 2.5 to also not be enough.
