What meme? I'm enjoying having control over my computer like I never did. It's not for everybody, and I'll admit that. But I didn't go into it thinking it would be easy. I went in with a pure hatred of big tech and a desire to control as much as I can myself. In that sense it's been quite fulfilling.
And hell in the age of AI you don't even need to read guides. Just ask claude or some shit and it can give you the command lines if you're lazy.

The problem with Linux is everyone always recommends stupid tinker distros.
>Use Gentoo
Why so I can spend a weekend getting stuff to work that works out of the box on any normal distro?
>Use Arch
Why so I can larp about control while using the same setup everyone else is using and then post a picture to Unix porn for some cheap updoots?

If you actually want to use Linux long term and not just as a meme pick a distro that people actually use to get shit done. I would suggest fedora, Ubuntu, or possibly mint, but I haven't used it. I have used some of the memes myself, but over time you realize the workflow just sucks. I don't want to compile every time I get an update. I don't want to waste space on backups I am not going to use. I don't want to have to fuck with configs every time I update because it has to be reproducible. The secret redpill of Linux is that you always lose control anyways unless you have Stallmans discipline. You'll lose it either when you install and discover that only proprietary firmware/software allows your wifi to work, or when you want some software that isn't packaged on your distro so you just use a flatpak which probably isn't "pure" according to the rules of your distro.

I think partially this, but I think its more forgetting the point. The computer is a tool that we use to get things done. If the tool isn't fit for purpose out of the box then its a crappy tool. If you bought a hammer and had to assemble it to prove that you were in control people would think you were insane.

Anyone who spends that much time trying to find some imaginary optimum is always going to fail.

The final redpill is to just slap any of the big distros on there and use a desktop environment configured to mostly the default.

I just install Kubuntu, set up a few hotkeys and a solid color desktop background. That gives me a fully functional and useful environment to do actual work with. I work as a software developer targeting embedded Linux devices, so I spend all my days doing actual work. No time to waste on ricing the computer.

If you really like Windows try KDE, e.g. Fedora KDE edition. Honestly when I first used Linux I thought it was a retarded waste of time, but that was because I was using GNOME and most distros nowadays are fucking GNOME. Once I tried KDE everything clicked and I got an actual workflow. GNOME has no workflow. Cinnamon is legacy bullshit.

>Updating and downloading software isn't part of a workflow
Its not just DE or software that determine workflow. If you are developing software often times you need an up to date version of what you are using. If getting an up to date version requires waiting for hours to compile then that is a bad workflow full stop.
>But on arch
Yeah sure your not compiling but the AUR is basically the NPM of Linux. Arch basically just gave up on managing the repos. The nice thing about well curated package repos is that you don't have to expand your circle of trust beyond the people who are maintaining your software. Arch gives up on verification for speed. Which is why they have malware on their repos.

Weird. I use Linux BECAUSE you can make a minimal, low resource installation that doesn't have a bunch of unnecessary bloat and telemetry constantly running. I like getting 13 hours out of my "10 hour" battery.

I just wish I knew about the BSD operating systems sooner, since those are even lighter on resources. I already have a gaming PC, so the only thing I use my laptop for is coding and listening to Youtube videos. Having insane battery life is very helpful when you want to work somewhere that doesn't have easy access to a power outlet.

Just start with installing it in VM to try it out.
You can use chatbots to help you with most things and explain how things work. It should be pretty easy to get started compared to 10 years ago.
There's a lot of manual stuff you have to do in the terminal to get things working for the most part.
But that's the price you pay for getting to own your OS and being able to modify it and so on.

I reccommend you try xubuntu. It's a distribution of ubuntu with xfce desktop enviromnent preinstalled.
It works well, and the desktop environment (the look and feel and placement of elements like menus and such) is very customizable as is, and it's easy for beginners because you do it through normal graphical user interfaces. There are lots and lots of settings and options you can fiddle with to make it perfect for your usecase.
xfce is probably the easiest and most configurable desktop environment to use if you come from windows or mac and just want something that works out of the box.
