So, apparently my ISP installed this on the back of my modem to gimp my Internet speed? Anyone else deal with this?

It's a filter. It filters noise. Your ISP doesn't need to install filters to gimp your speeds, that's what their pre-supplied shitty modems are for.

Doubt. We didnt used to have one and some technicians showed up one day for a "random inspection" and put it on. My GF and I heard them whispering about how our connection was "too fast" and ever since they put it on it's been like half as fast as it used to be.

We just tried switching to a new ISP today but he couldn't access the maintenance room in our building to finish setting up so he had to cancel the job. While he was here we got to talking to him about the random inspection incident and he said he used to work for our ISP and that they used those filters back in the day to block people from getting free HBO and premium channels on their cable. He said that's probably why ours is so slow now. I'll post results after I remove it tomorrow.

Anons, check the back of your modems to see if you have a filter. If you do, remove it and see what happens. I bet it will increase your speeds exponentially. Worst case scenario you can just put it back on.

Either its there so its within the right decibel range of possibly a moca filter,it won't gimp your speed

Probably a moca filter, no slowdown afaik but definitely has benefits like keeping your neighbors from accessing your modem.

OP it was the same for me they came bexaue they said they wanted to service the outlet or something. Then they installed that and the speed was like shit. I was like hell no I know what that thing is (t. RF engineer)it's an attenuator. Basixally the modem, measuring worse SNR, reduces bandwidth to maintain reliability of the connection. And it was slow asf. So I got pliers and twisted it off. Gotta twist and pull hard but not break it off sideways. Reattach cable. All good again.

They fuse a filter on the end of your cable hookup if you dont pay for cable TV so they know if you are trying to steal cable TV.

Cable bros, xfinity is ditching coax in our area and it's full FTTH

if it's gimping the download so hard just ask for a lower impedance attenuator from your ISP. they probably just installed the wrong one
