Is it worth it in 2025
I might buy one from Japan. I need it mostly for some Fifa 12 before bed. Other than that, an excuse to use my soldering iron to install a type c port and to play with Linux on it, watch older tv shows, etc. Is it worth it in 2025?
Also, most ebay listings seem to say it's new, but the box shown has clearly been opened. Some state it's been open for testing. What's the deal with that or rather the likelihood of someone having owned it for a while?

it has no custom firmware. I don't know what the official firmware is based on, but it doesn't look like any normal linux.
>install a type c port
most of the time spent doing that is going to be carefully sanding the PCB and plastic shell. if you get the USB-C kit from giltesa you are in for some pain as it does not fit properly and trying to put the plastic shell back on over it will cause it to rip off. if you buy the no-name chink kit then you will have to desolder and reuse some super tiny SMDs.
>japanese seller
make sure you get one that shows the screen on. a lot of japs leave their game consoles sitting out where the sunlight gets them and yellows the screen.

they are all used. there are no new units anymore.

love me vita, but I don't recommend it. I play vita games and old NES and SNES games on it.

there are a shit ton of brand new devices from china that are far, far more powerful, and cheaper as well. the Mangmi Air X is the newest best deal.

>is it worth it
eeeeehhh depends. for emulation you can basically play nes and snes and it's not strong enough for anything else. any equivalently priced china retro handheld will perform much better at that kind of stuff. the only reason to get one would be vita games specifically since you can get em all free and don't have to deal with vita emulation. Particularly for visual novels and rpgs it's really good. I loved playing Stein's Gate, Persona 4 Golden, Trails of Cold Steel, etc on mine. If you're into that stuff then it's super worth it. I even put a custom steins gate theme on it and set the main menu music to 'Quiet Air'. its ultra comfy, I don't regret it one bit.

It's a cute little device, easily hackable with a lot of nice homebrew, it even has an app that casually gives you access to most PSN games for Vita for free. I'm currently playing Half Life on it via Xash3d fwgs, but there are no gyro controls and the analog sticks are too sensitive and designed for someone with baby hands aiming is difficult. I don't think it should be too bad for some Fifa.
If you pull the trigger I recommend buying a good microSD card for it (that at least has Application Performance Class A2). It's a night and day difference compared to old, cheapo cards.

Steam Deck and its clones are much bigger devices. Maybe there's some chink handheld in that form factor but last time I checked they're are either very expensive or the cheap ones are some ARMshits, at which point you might as well buy the used Vita which has a bigger library of games compared to Androidslop and has a still active homebrew community making shit for it.

you belong in /v/ but unironically no, a vita is probably not worth it unless you're super into niche anime games. its homebrew scene is developed but doesn't compare to just getting some shitty Steam Deck gaymer knockoff and throwing W10 IOT LTSC or your favorite Troonix distro on it and calling it a day, and for gaming specifically the vita died specifically because it had nogaems (sony pony devs preferred developing for the PSP, which was still being made during a lot of the Vita's short lifespan, and developers who wanted to make any real money just deployed to DS/DSi/3DS)

yeah they mostly only came out recently now that you can cram a laptop board into particularly-large-phone sized device

when the vita was "popular" it was the only game in town and your alternative were 2500$ meme machines with as much power as an eepc but costing five times the price because they bolted half a gamepad to either side

these days, yeah, get one of those "vita clones" or a deck clone or a switch clone or whatever but keep in mind that the vita formally died in 2019 which was eight years ago

It depends. Vita its probably the best handheld device you can find, and has so many tech features that were unreal for the time of its release. Personally, I love my vita slim and I still use it to this day.
>Hacking it
Its easy to hack, but you're gonna need to buy micro sd adapter first. Buy more than 256gb if you are looking to dump games
>About emulation
If you want to emulate everything, you would be better off with a steam deck, but if you are looking for a console that is easy to carry around, then vita is great. Vita can emulate nes, snes, sega genesis, gb+gba, with RA, it plays ps1+psp games natively via adrenaline(underclock it if you have stuttering issues with ps1 eboots), and there lots and lots of ported games to be found.
>Slim or Oled
Slim is lighter and has more plastics than oled, (but you can feel that its premium plastic), has a micro USB port, and the battery lasts longer. The screen is not as crispy as the oled one, but its underrated since its looks just as great and its more durable
Oled model is fatter, has a unique charging port, and the screen is crispier, but prone to oled burn. Also no internal memory, and the battery is smaller
>Movies and the type c mod
No and hard no. You are better off watching movies on your phone rather than your vita. There is no reason to fuck up your vita, since there are charging adapters for both models.
>Ports
This is where it's at. Vita has a huge amount of ported games(ocarina of time, gta trilogy, the world ends with you, mario64 60fps etc) in its library, its insane. It was one of the reasons I purchased a vita. The vita community is probably the most active console hacking community on the internet, and there are contests that encourage porting games with money as a prize. If you are an aspiring programmer, you can start building a nice portfolio by porting stuff on vita, since, assuming you got the basic knowledge, its easier than ever from what I hear

I got a PCH-1000 (OLED model) recently. Pretty solid device, but you obviously wanna install HENkaku CFW on it, as soon as you get your hands on it. There's a pretty good guide on it here: https://vita.hacks.guide/

Alongside that, you should also get an SD2Vita adapter, so you aren't reliant on the expensive proprietary memory cards. Do keep in mind that this will take up the game cartridge slot and require some fiddling with YAMT to set up, but that's explained in the guide, anyways.

If you're not sure if you wanna get the PCH-1000 or PCH-2000, do consider that while the PCH-1000 has a better screen (it's OLED after all, even if it's an early one, with a couple issues that come with it), better build quality and hall-effect sticks, the PCH-2000 has better battery life, so try to weigh out what matters more to you.

When you got a CFW installed, you open the doors to not just get yourself a bunch of Vita and PSP games using PKGj and Adrenaline, but you can also natively run PS1 games, use emulators, or play literally hundreds of homebrew ports of games, stream games from your PC using Moonlight, use your Vita as a controller, use it for all sorts of multimedia, etc.

Sure, it's pretty outdated now, but I still think it's a pretty neat little device and if you can pick it up for a good price (somewhere around 100 dollars), it's worth it.

it's nor worth it to buy any actual console when you can buy a handheld emulator. You have the retroid pocket 5 which can play PS Vita games for free. It can also play any game on the play store since it's an android device.
