general rule of thumb is laptops have 1/3 of the performance of desktops, mainly because of thermal constraints, so i tend to avoid them

Best they can do is a plastic chassis with a last-gen i3.

continuing to sell the 7700S is absolutely clownish considering how much time and money they have sunk into the AMD partnership.

That and the lack of Strix Halo means they are trying to kill this product, it's really obvious at this point. Why not just buy the AI 9 HX 370 13 board instead? it still can't be used for AI because it doesn't support ROCm.

It got upgrades only after they created two entirely new products in two completely different categories. They're basically spitting in the face of everyone who bought one of these things, there isn't a single reason to buy a 16 over a 13 considering the price.

>8GB GDDR7
basically useless. you can get a full 5070 for $100 less with 12GB of VRAM.
>b-b-b-but we didn't have room on the board!
increase the RAM density you shysty fucks. you're telling me you can't fit 16GB of VRAM on the board or at least 12 when other laptop manufacturers manage to do this easily in less space? who is running the 16 product management?

If you bought a 16 at launch you now have to spend at least $2000 to upgrade to max spec with no way to reuse the original mainboard or screen (or god forbid the original 7700S if you purchased one as well.

You can buy an entirely new laptop with better specs for $2100 and one with matching specs for like $1700.

Any chance of notable price drops for the original Framework 16?

Or a 4060/4070 module for those of us who care about 32 bit PhysX support?

I'm so sick of hearing Framework fans defend they're over priced tinker pads. These things are a huge wast of money.

Chances are that Framework wanted something better but AMD isn't offering anything. No RDNA4 laptop chips currently exist and it doesn't seem like they're making anything soon
>or at least 12 when other laptop manufacturers manage to do this easily in less space
Source on this? Every other laptop manufacturer has been getting shafted by Nvidia with 8GB 5070s to the point where Jarrod's Tech and HUB made a video on it.

>>You can buy an entirely new laptop with better specs for $2100 and one with matching specs for like $1700.
This is true, pricing is fucked on the 16 and I can't recommend any of my friends to pay premium or MBP prices for mediocre specs.

>Any chance of notable price drops for the original Framework 16?
You'll have to wait longer, it takes a few months before they start dropping prices on old stock.
>Or a 4060/4070 module for those of us who care about 32 bit PhysX support?
Nvidia stopped making those chips last year, you're shit out of luck.

At the moment, the only good products Framework is really offering are the 13 and the Desktop. Everything else seems to be too expensive for what's on offer.

unlikely, they will cut prices on some of the original parts though until they've gotten through them

this will never happen

Just about. They've been selling that laptop for the past two years but the GPU module is getting a refresh with the same chip.
The 5070 will beat the 7700S but it's getting kneecapped by the 8GB of VRAM, it's not worth the $700 premium that Framework is asking for.

If AMD isn't offering anything they could have easily at least built a Strix Halo board. Even with soldered RAM and downclocked it's a more viable path forward than the fucking same chip that's in the 13 with a little bit of extra wattage. The 890M is anemic compared to the 8060S and doesn't belong in a fucking 16" form factor unless you're adding a GPU immediately.

That AI 7 350 board is so embarrassing I forgot about it, it's literally slower than both of the previous boards (7[8||9]40HS and still $200 overpriced. I have no idea what they are thinking.

OK fair enough I didn't realize nobody were adding more than 8GB on the mobile 5070s. Now I'm just more mad at Nvidia.

This. I'd even take it with soldered RAM as long as they offered the same 64GB config as the desktop. Sucks that Asus is the only company offering Halo in a portable form factor.

for coffee shop usage just take the 13 and build a gpu server at home and access it through ssh

the 13 with the amd board is good enough for light/medium game on a 13" screen you don't need more, use your server for stuff like IA or rendering

no one will run a full gaming laptop with the gpu at 100% at a coffee shop because of the noise

Yeah. It was a pretty good chip for this usecase, it's power-efficient and fast enough to play every game at 60.
