Batteries generally "like" to be around 50% charge as much as possible, plus it's bad for them to charge quickly. This means that capping max charge below 100% works and it also means that it's good to not let it drain completely over and over if you can avoid it. The more conservative you are with how you treat the battery, the slower it degrades. Constantly running it 100% to 0% is worse than 80% to 20% which is worse than 70% to 30% and so on. Obviously the more conservative you are the less usable battery capacity you get, so just be as conservative as you can while still accomplishing your tasks with your device.
If you're looking at a laptop that's plugged in all the time, then you could realistically set it to 55%-45% range for instance, if it's a phone or something else that actually needs to run off the battery all the time then figure out what you can get away with in your use case. For example with my phone I charge it slowly overnight to 100% and plug it in when I go to sleep if the battery is under 40%. I don't use it much (under 45min screen time per day) so in practice it charges from like 20-30% to 100% once every 2-4 days.
