Is Nix worth learning or is it overhyped?

If you have to ask then no.
don't just adopt tech you're not willing to learn.
It will be painful, you will fuck things up, and you will cry about it being the tools fault instead of a skill issue.

I tried it once. It worked well and the package installation process was neat if different. Still have my configuration for if I ever decide to give it a shot again.
But at some point I needed software that wasn't provided in the manage, and trying to figure that out was more effort than just using something I'm more familiar with.

This.
Wonderful rule of thumb with anything in this tech realm, really.

Haven't tried NixOS because I don't have a need for it, but the package manager is a godsend for distros with small and outdated repos like ubuntu

It's only worth it for servers, the nix language is some functional ml style mess that spits out json but it's still better than having to use ansible. if you wanna use dotfiles and install some packages for your desktop there are simpler alternatives

nix is used on the job market like devops similar to docker
so it's not a meme like archlinux

very overhyped imo. If you need to use troonix, just pick a just werks distro and call it a day.

Debian stable with nix is the endgame of loonix distros

it's very good, but it's also very bad. I personally think it's the best way to fully describe software, from development, to building, to packaging into containers and nothing is as cohesive and magical.

the problem is, most wagies are mentally retarded and can't understand it or why it exist on top of it directly contending with shittier corporate rules and tools not supporting it. It's absolutely unreal how beautiful it is though when you really know. oh well.

it's good but you need to know to avoid meme ideas like home-manager a few other. the problem is most youtubers will meme you into some non sense, once you master the subset you need it's really productive

this, although you will only learn this the hard way. personally I only use it on the server and have it on my work system so far, but I really wanna migrate my whole setup there. worst part is the leaky/half-assed abstraction of some packages like nixvim, those are a meme too. if you are worried about the woke just look at determinate.systems nix (by the og nix devs) and ekapgs (once it finishes if ever)

is it hyped? anyway, its a shitton of effort. Id only recommend if youre already confident in linux sysadmin stuff and are curious. also only for a server, not a desktop. its works great though, last OS upgrade I did on it was the least cumbersom Ive ever seen

it's a good test to check you're white. If you can figure it out in a week you are white, if you can't you're brown/black.
