I'm using Comfy but 95% of the time I'm using a very simple workflow that is the same as Forge and Wainsfw 14 for most things unless I'm trying a new model that I end up not liking.
I really hope for a game changer but honestly is the only one I get consistent and fast results, I've tried other models that people use to create cool shit but they end up not clicking with me

This "upscale" is just basic shitty GAN upscaler though. Look at the gen closely.
Actual upscale (that works similarly to hires fix) costs around 14-23 anlas on average depending on the denoise (although you can upscale for "free" by using tile upscaling).

no, it upscales with an AI upscale model like the next anon said. there are better local upscale models though, just install chaiNNer and use whatever GAN model you like to upscale for free instead, and use your anlas to gen higher res pics instead, imo genning at higher resolution in the first place tends to give better results

Would be easier for you to ask some AI if you want detailed definition of what VAE is, probably. In short, it allows genning smaller details without cranking up resolution. Flux would be a decent local example, it has a 16ch vae which is better than SDXL's (noob and illustrious are sdxl models) 4ch VAE. Although it can also capture "bad" details like jpeg noise.
