Nicehck YD520 are pretty good for $15. These might replace the ED9 pro as my favorite bullet IEMs.
They don't stick out far at all, I can sleep on my side with these against the pillow. Great overall balance and imaging. Build quality is cheap generic plastic, I can see exactly where these will break in half, but that won't be hard to fix.

You know which iems I kinda miss? The Sony MH1C. Couldn't tell you why. It must've been 8 years since I've heard them. They were a pain to wear, but they sounded so smooth and unfussy (if a little undetailed).

The YD520s have unusually good detail retrieval (possibly better than the Q1 pro) but also sort of sound "low-def" like the KZ ATE did.
Very good tuning but probably not the best distortion because of the cheap PET driver. The treble and off gassing plastic stench will probably be a bit much for some people

Similar to KZ, I think Nicehck is best at making cheap single DD earphones that sound better than mainstream Sony, JVC, Phillips et al. They've both beat the "stuff a bunch of random shit in a cable-up IEM" gimmick to death. Time to go back to basics.

cont:

>You should also disable any sound processing software on your laptop. They may be boosting bass unbeknownst to you.

As I said, this laptop has Nahmic installed, which has some basic sliders for bass, treble, voices etc, and then also has discrete equalizer sliders for 32, 64, 125, 250, 500, 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, and 16khz each. I definetely think I do want equalizer software with even more discrete, finer tweaks then those, but even figuring out what each frequency slider there does is already a bit much for me

It is also apparently a huge pain to fully uninstall nahmic, and I've also read that FXsound and some other equalizer software can similarly fuck up your audio drivers and be difficult to remove/fix at times so I am hesitant to try them: I have used equalizer APO once but found it confusing, and somebody suggested Voicemeeter Bannana, though the UI for that also seems very overwhelming

>>106405738
Is there a guide for how to read/interpret these for dummies? Or a way to generate one for hardware I can't find one for, like the Ally, to then try to find speakers that have a similar graph response to it?

Also re: hardware that can do both highs and lows without both drowning each other out, would getting seperate subs help with that? What should I be looking for there? I had to return the Edifier MR3's I had (I might rebuy them tho) but I still have the Kanto ORAMG speakers

You can like whatever you like brother, but your "revelations," and comparisons are 5 years behind. Bullet style is a limiting form factor, and companies barely put their best foot forward. Even more than other budget pos, bullets are compromised in terms of
driver quality used, sophistication of tuning, etc.
I'm not some malding weirdo just chiming in. Thanks for sharing your thoughts through your bullet journey.
Have you tried any Final bullets btw? They are nice for a warmer listen, also include fairly famous ear tips. Not great build quality or treble resolution, but smooth and oddly good with imaging / holography

It's generally recommended to use equalizer APO because it has full parametric EQ, more control. Can't exactly advise the troubleshooting problems you may face. Nahmic and all that stuff is just crappy bloatware, I remember dealing with it in the past. It's ideal if you figure out how to get down to the bare driver for audio function and move on to equalizer APO + Peace GUI.
For reading frequency response graphs, it takes some time. You can click the yellow question mark on squig.link for quick tutorial. The EQ guide in OP is more in depth. Basically for all audio products, you can just search "model + frequency response graph" and try to find a sample. There is lots of context around graphs to understand that not all graphs are equivalent (may be measured with different methodology, may be compensated / presented to us in different scale, distinguishing between "flat," for room speakers versus headphones, etc.). Most of those finer details are in the EQ guide

to monitoringfags: monitoring is not a single activity with one target curve, it's a whole group of activities
>vocal monitoring
mid-centric, muddy, dark and velied tuning like Shure SE215 or Softears Studio 2 works the best, as it focuses on the most critical region
>drum monitoring
tuning with boosted, tactile bass and gentle treble to feel the impact but not get tired after hours of playing
>mixing & mastering
tuning that's as close to neutral as possible, which means DF with adjustments, ideally as close to your HRTF as you can get, realistically JM-1 is the way to go
to the IE100 Pro anon >>106403581 - this pos is tuned according to the outdated tuning philosophy from the 2000's when 3k ear gain wasn't yet a widely known phenomenon and the whole anatomy thing was largely ignored, it was just an audio engineer tuning IEMs according to his own (flawed) perception and when it worked, it worked, but was far cry from the current methodology that's why nowadays even $20 shit like Salnotes Zero, Tangzu Wanker or even older and worse models like CCA CRA are tuned better than IE100 Pro, IE300 or IE900
in contrast, IE600 and IE200 are where Sennheiser actually did its homework and started to tune IEMs according to human anatomy which is a great breakthrough for the company and a leap in quality
the 3k ear gain is there for a very good reason because of how human anatomy works and how human brain is compensating for it throughout the whole life, that's why a flat line tuning in pos results in perceivably severely recessed 3k during audition

Hey, dumb-dumb. You seem naive so I'll cut you some slack. A lot of Headfiers benefit from these Chi-Fi brands via free units being sent for review which fuels their dopamine rush; In return, these reviewers balance singing praise with "minor drawbacks." Conveniently, these "drawbacks" all have the same solution; either hold onto an iem you don't vibe with instead of just returning it, or buy more bullshit (for example, if you hear an iem has dark treble, you'll be told the solution to 'brighten' it is to use a 'bright' source, which disregards the fact that any reputable source is meant to measure flat, not color the sound). For your own sanity, stop reading so deeply into Headfi reviews.
