It's got nothing to do with the tab hibernation/ram issues that were more common in the past.
What I mean is that Firefox is fairly odd when handling new tabs. If you tap the new tab button, you don't actually get a new tab, it just changes to the home page. If you enter a new url there, Firefox may either open a new tab, or just reuse the current one (so you still have a single tab). There is no real explanation how Firefox decides this and no way to go around it unless you install something like the Essential Buttons extension, which creates a toolbar where you can add a proper new tab button.
So yeah, if you're just using a single tab all the time or you just open new tabs from links by holding down the link and selecting the popup menu, it's fine. Otherwise it can be a bit infuriating.
