macOS sucks too, like it or not but windows is the only decent option, when you consider factors that actually matter.

I have used Windows, Mac, and Linux, and Linux is the best overall. Mac has a lot of stupid defaults that you can't change.

It has its problems, but Apple is the only company making decent laptops - the only ones where power management works correctly.

>GUI installer
good? GUI installer is how you encourage people to do the wrong thing 100% of the time. I deal with shitware that's driven by some GUI installer, and I end up having to do post-install fix-ups. Documenting how to actually install your software > shitty gui installer that hides 80% of valid configurations. kys.

I hate GUI installers. Debian Testing + Gnome (default config) is the best UI/OS experience I've ever had. Currently on windows 11, due to project I am on, and I fucking hate it.

>general light desktop use
macOS is very comfy for this, and the base configs for their hardware are only mildly overpriced nowadays.
Linux (any recent KDE distro) is fine too.
For me, Windows is a no-go for this use case. It's too eager to interrupt me to insist on a reboot or add a Candy Crush ad to my start menu or try to convince me to make a Microsoft account or whatever the fuck. Why deal with that when I don't have to?
For a while, it did have one advantage in that it was the only OS to handle fractional DPI scaling properly. But KDE supports that now too.

>video games
I recently set up Bazzite on an old AMD APU rig as a basic couch gaming HTPC. It works shockingly well, much better than my earlier attempt to use Windows for the same thing. No compatibility issues at all. No drivers to choose. No forced reboots to install updates. There was a weird mouse cursor bug in the installer, but it's flawless once installed.
I still run Windows on my main gaming machine, but at this point that's mostly out of inertia (and because I have an Nvidia card). If I was building a new gaming rig now, I would seriously consider using a 9070xt and running a gaming-focused distro like Bazzite. Not out of FOSS ideology, but just because it genuinely seems to be a better experience.

I guess if you have a 5090 and want the absolute best possible performance and/or want to play ultra-locked-down multiplayer titles like Battlefield then you'll still want win11 instead.

>work
This obviously depends on what you do. For me work means web development, with heavy use of Docker. That means Linux is by far the best fit. Using anything else means running Docker in a VM, which is a retarded layer of extra bloat. Even if Docker isn't a factor, I think desktop Linux is still the best fit for most dev workflows.

>laptop
You probably want a Macbook. Better hardware/software integration than anything else.

I think the more reasonable counterpoint would be that you’re only safe until Apple decides to stop caring as much. And you’re never safe from Apple. Like 70% of the zero-click (or tap) CVEs on iOS are from Apples own apps having extra privileges

Is that a bad thing? Most linux packages are pretty standardized where they install and good package managers will allow you to install opt-deps easily.
