Samsung introduced the Galaxy Player 5.0 (their ipod touch competitor) and people said that thing was massive, and then a year later they introduced the first Galaxy Note which had a 5.3" sized display. (again, people thought these were huge)
Nowadays, the smallest mainstream phone you can get (excluding Unihertz) is an iPhone mini, with a 5.5" screen. It's weird how our standards have changed.
