Even guntoting burgers with fantasies of castle doctrine will balk at opening fire on a group at 20 meters. The dream is to be the unexpected hero, who can come at an enemy unprepared and neutralize them immediately; they come out unscathed, or grit their teeth and eat it like they're the Punisher or some 80s action hero. Confronted with reality, survival instincts kick in and tell them the obvious math: they're not getting out a fight with 10 or 20 people at 5-20 meters without a whole lot of pain.
Most people are averse not just to death, but pain. If you've got nothing else to live for, feel free to be the hero.
