Data harvesting is the only reason I can think of and I think the data about random anime girls is as close to useless as it gets.
What's your GPU and what model do you want to train for?
Something like SDXL you can train loras with budget GPUs like 3060.
If not try hiring some cheap GPUs from lower end services like vast.ai (inb4 muh advertising) If you know what you are doing you can easily get it done for a few bucks, or even under a dollar.
The reliability can get questionable but for the money you can't complain.
I haven't actually used it for AI myself, but I used it for other shit in the past.

A lot of people train on civitai but it's restrictive. So yeah there's no *free* alternative that allows you to use full-on UI that you can do anything with.
Paperspace is relatively cheap though, I used it to prompt and know a guy who used it pretty extensively to train stuff with. Dunno about now, but when I used it, for $10 a month you got good GPUs decently often and the sessions were 6 hours. The worst part is very low permanent storage and the fact that they want to overcharge you for using it above limit without explicit warnings, but if you're careful and use temporary session storage it's fine.

Believe me so would I. I would be fairly mortified if any of the artist whose tags I use ever found my gens. That's part of why I don't post anything on pixiv, in addition to the gens just not being that good, and not considering myself anything in the remote orbit of an artist. At the very best I might be some kind of directing photographer but by and large I use comfy the same way I use gelbooru. Tags in, anything remotely acceptable out. I never really have a "vision" for my stuff, just a single idea or trope at a time. I think some "AI artists" are kind of like "pet parents," they mistake themselves for the real thing because they are having some of the same "experiences" but discount how many they're also missing. Although my opinion may be skewed because I'm a failed real artist.

It's just an artistic branch that's less than 5 years old! The first SD model came out around 2020. It's all very new, but for me it has the value of effort and work like any other art. Obviously there are the famous 'slop' people who just hit the generate button and forget about their art.

But then there are people who spend hours doing inpainting, selecting tags, adjusting LoRAs, sometimes not sleeping thinking about how they can improve their art (like me).

I recall being a young child and seeing horses jumping 6 inches on TV. Very hard to train them to do that, end result still not impressive. Now gens that get inpainted to hell and back can be impressive, but still, consider. If you have a photo with a lot of mistakes in it, and you go over it all with the Photoshop spot heal brush, are you then an artist? Or maybe you have some vision for an obscure pose so you take a picture of yourself doing it and use controlnet img2img. You have to divide cfg by 4 for cfg++ samplers, instead you got burnt to a crisp images for the best samplers out there because you don't even know how to use them.
