Freetards once again. Free Plex with a local only account can do everything Jellyfin can. Plex pass adds additional features you Jellytards have been waiting on for years.
Even the simple idea of sharing libraries between Jellyfin servers is inconceivable to Jellytards. I've seen a popular forum post about this feature from 2019. Not to mention every single Jellyfin client SUCKS.
Even if I didn't have Plex pass, I would still use Plex for free over this abandonware.

When I looked into it was a lot more than just that; it was also basically needing me to set up a lot of little things to even get it to work. I heard it's way better, but so is an extension cord from my neighbor's house vs digging a tunnel and wiring directly into him.

It's hard to say since you don't remember what happened, but it sounds like that might have been Tailscale.
Tailscale is the Plex of Wireguard. Wireguard is free.

I honestly don't know what to tell you. Maybe Plex is actually the right choice for you. From this post and your other posts you seem so helpless that paying for the privilege to download your own files might actually be best in your specific case.

I joined my friend's Plex family and haven't given that company a single cent. Seems like the best option.

Usecase for these services when I could just use nfs or smb? Or even just reverse proxy a static file server?

>looks nicer
>luddite family members can use it
>no need to do complex setup wherever you want to use it e.g. just log in on the hotel TV and you're straight in.
>easy grabbing of subtitles
>track what episode you're on and where in the episode (stop and pick up where you left off, no need to remember)
>plexamp on your phone to avoid paying for spotify is also nice.

there's always some faggot in these threads talking about "paying to pirate" which makes me think they have no idea what torrents actually are, or are some bandwagoning redditor who has actually never pirated anything in their life

The old pricing for the lifetime pass used to be worth it, now I'm shilling Jellyfin to everyone asking me for a media server solution
But... Jellyfin still not having a native TV app without sideloading's a huge deal breaker when you're sharing it with family members and they live far away
If I was consuming media by myself I wouldn't really bother setting up Jellyfin or Plex or whatever
