AVS is a fairly new PD standard, boomer.
it is actually pretty cool and turns a basic charger into basically a bench power supply able to produce any voltage you want between 3 and 24 at the extremes of the spec iirc.

all the range means is that the phone and the charger will work together with AVS to meet current demands and scale them back when not needed. this keeps heat out of the phone and out of the battery and increases efficiency.

In other uses not iphone you can literally use it to eliminate onboard chargers altogether and just directly produce a 4.35V limited constant current psu to directly charge the lipo cell. like the charger is the actual charger for once. this has large advantages in efficiency and battery lifespan
