xp x64 edition came out in 2005, vista in 2006. few home users in 2005-2006 even had 4G of ram, so no, you didn't find it on home computers simply because those people didn't have a use for it. there was also naturally downsides to switching early on as well, given that you needed 64bit drivers and software compatibility wasn't identical, so only those who /really/ needed it used it. even many vista home computers shipped with 32bit versions, things only started to come 64bit by default around the 7 era (of prebuilt home user computers), but not because 7 did 64bit any better really, rather that it was simply more mature (more drivers, compatible software), and a use for it (computers shipping with 4G+ ram ootb)
