There was no societal need for technology to ever progress past this point.

But then I realized that AI and streaming destroyed the internet
I totally agree, except add YouTube

I know we look back with rose tints, but that era had its own obnoxious problems

Theres a strong argument to be made for locking technology where it stood on January 8th 2007.

I lived in the middle of a small village, we had ADSL and it was at 1-2megabit.
Don't listen to these anons, 2006 wasn't that bad. In 2006 I was pirating games non stop, I was still using newsgroups.

yeah, it took time to download a game since it would be between 4-9GB, maybe more for a PC game but it wasn't that bad.

2006 was great. 640 kbps was plenty enough for me. You only had to wait a night or so to download a multiple GB game. The world went crazy a few years after, but before that happened we had a few good years.

they were conceived early but unviable for decades because the gates would wear down too fast. mid to late 2000s had a number of breakthroughs that made them commercially viable at large sizes.

2006-7 was when ssds just entered mainstream high end
they were stupid expensive compared to today ($500+, do inflation calculations) and 32-64gb but you could find them
also remember this was well before even 1tb hdds to put the size into some context
