Plastic gears are only a bad idea when they're a cost cutting measure to replace metal gears. In that assembly, I'd guess the frame at the bottom will break before the gears do.

If, for some godawful reason, I was too weak to open the bottles or had too many to open at once (volunteering at the retirement home?), I'd rather use a drill press to open a hole in them and then stick a straw in.
Heck, may not even need the drill. Just punch a nail through a wood block and press down.
