I've decided that fuck it, I'll get that Keychron v6 Max, and I'll either give Aula away or keep it as a backup. Since that one wasn't barebones (Keychron is), it's a fully operational keyboard once I put the original keys back in.

Now, to be clear, although you can stop it indicating under the numlock/etc., it doesn't have a dedicated indicator LED anywhere so if you disable the lights under the switches you won't be able to know whether caps lock/etc are enabled.

I don't mind that that much. I very, very rarely looked at the indicators on my old keyboard, mostly just watching the output, but for something like passsworfs it might be useful. If it's an option, then maybe I'll keep it for caps lock, but turn it off for numlock (I've got numlock effectively almost always on). Could I also control how bright the indication under the key would be? Maybe on lowest brightness it wouldn't be as glaring.
Is there any QMK tutorial around? You write scripts for it in C if you want to customize it more, right? At least that's what I've seen. I haven't programmed anything in it in years (and I generally almost don't nowadays), but I did in the past, so I might be able to handle it with an initial push.
>>106571339
Thanks. I feel like this might be a bit above my abilities, but I'll consider it in the future. I generally don't care so much about the "quality" of the sound, since I just want to make it quieter. I guess with a foam mod I could just stuff more of it to achieve that goal?
Anonymous No.106571600

Yeah they're in C. I don't even know C particularly but the tweaks you'd make are so basic that you really don't need to.

You'll need to install QMK MSYS, which is the program that does the QMK compiling:
https://msys.qmk.fm/
And you'll need to copy Keychron's 'wireless playground' branch of the QMK repo:
https://github.com/Keychron/qmk_firmware/tree/wireless_playground

From there it's just a matter of making a copy of the V6 max in the keyboards folder, making any edits you want to make to its files, and then compiling it with QMK MSYS and flashing your board with that same program. IIRC. Also the V6 max can I believe be started in bootloader mode by holding esc when you connect the usb cable.

QMK MSYS can be a bit unwieldy at first

Can a board that doesn't have VIA be modified to accept it? How complicated would it be to do if it is possible? I'm kind of a dumb boomer when it comes to this stuff, I built my own board but it was more just like ordering the barebones base and sticking the switches and caps in. Going much beyond that I'm not sure I would have the technical knowhow. I'm asking because there is a board I really like but it doesn't have VIA it's got some gay proprietary shit that is horrible. I tried it out and couldn't get it to do what I wanted so I had to return it. But I can't stop thinking about how good it was besides that. Am I really stuck never being able to use it if companies don't build their boards around VIA?

QMK boards can, but the kind of thing you're talking about, no, not without some serious 'hardware hacking' and maybe even replacing the controller chip. Nobody takes this kind of trouble for boards like that. Just get an actually good custom keyboard with QMK firmware.

>>106578461
The only way I can imagine such a thing working is that it is a kind of fake keyboard between your PC and the keyboard, interpreting and changing the signal from the keyboard depending on how you configure it in VIA. I think that sounds like a really bad solution which will guaranteed add latency and might not even work.
>this module does not guarantee that all functions can be realized. There are also some bugs in these software. Please do not shoot if you mind.
If you were stuck with the keyboard I'd say give it a go, but you're not so you shouldn't.

If it wasn't for not having VIA it would be a perfect board for me. Honestly might just try to make it work without it if I can't find something better in the next year or two. Need to get my monies worth with the board I have now first.

Finished cherry-picking and this is how it turned out: most of the Gateron Lanes sound a little bit different from a regular mx tactile, but a large minority have totally suppressed the click leaf to be nearly indistinguishable from one. A small minority fail to suppress the click such that you can recognize a click leaf sound, and a few of those are even louder.

I don't know how stable the sound of these will be over time. We'll see.

Internally how do they differ from the Melodics? Tactile Alps were just Clicky Alps, but with two extra prongs on the click leaf to prevent the leaf from moving, and thus not slapping into the housing and not making the "click" noise.
I doubt they mimicked that if they are seemingly this inconsistent in noise, and it's likely some half-assed dampening on the Melodic's tiny click leaf. Gateron also have utter dogshit, wildly different tolerances on their springs, and it's hilarious how much they charge for their switches considering that.

In general i would like some recommendations for keyboards that are not too pricey, as it's my first time buying a mechanical keyboard... I would also like to be in like maybe lavender color, but if that's not available that's fine, i dislike rgb lights. That's it i guess. Looking forward to some recommendations... I'm looking for blank fully black keycaps, TKL ANSI layout, ideally something that doesn't feel cheap but is not too expensive either. Kinda confused at the current price of keycap sets for something that's just mass produced molded plastic.
Some readily available brand on amazon or aliexpress would be appreciated too.
Also somehow my previous keyboard had smooth keycaps, probably ABS, that I liked more. But as I understand they're considered cheap now so maybe that would be a bit contradictory to ask for that.

I haven't tried them (maybe someone here did and can verify), but if you're not locked into the color, then you can find some cheap keyboard with hot-swap and then get some silent switches from aliexpress. They probably will have rgb, but you usually can turn that off. budget

You could also try to squeeze in some lavender keycaps in that price. If yout ook the redragon above and 90pcs (you'd have a lot of spares, but at least for that offer it turns out best price wise, you might find them cheaper elsewhere) Outemu Silent Peach v3 then it comes out to 248.59 PLN, so you'd have 176.33pln left which is plenty for keycaps. If you went for Aula and the same switches, then it's 292.64pln so 132.28pln leftover, still might be enough. For example, there's something like:

For the switches, I've got Jades, haven't used them much yet, but they seem fine so far. My friend got the Peaches and likes them a lot. So, I'd say both are fine, and it depends on whether you want tactile or linear.
For Aula, I got the f108 pro, and that one annoyed me (>>106538279), but the issues I had mostly won't apply to F65 since there is no screen nor numlock, so the only thing I'd point out is that caps lock will light up in white when it's on.

What really gets me is how bland and boring looking it is.

Pure topre autism since the switch is a custom capacitive. It also has some funky scissor switch looking stabilizers that they make.

If I wanted a 60% I'd be desperate to ensure I got one with QMK/VIA (or even better, Vial) because remapping multiple layers is so important and I don't want to deal with any proprietary software shit. That's why I could never be comfortable recommending random Ajazz/Epomaker/etc shit from aliexpress

It's essentially a fine art masked as mechanical engineering where this dude went down an autistic spiral on the space bar. It's not meant as a mass production unit but more an example of perfecting the mechanical engineering of a specific component he's always had an issue with. The screenshot I posted here >>106593367 is admittedly cherry picked of the titanium version which is the most expensive, but it's still over $3k for the base unit

I'm never going to watch a video from the raping blob, give me a tl;dw. What magical improvement did he make to the fucking spacebar? I've had an issue with mine maybe twice in 20 years because something got stuck under it.

I was questioning that why would this imply a problem in the industry. An artisan expensive artisan stuff isn't particularly problematic in other industries. It's like seeing problems in the arms industry because some sheikhs have golden plated AKs

Funny video. The fact that there's some actual practical changes to the function of the products is actually pretty neat. I find it amusing that the way fix the "Biggest Problem" amounted to "have a competent engineer look at it"; who would have thought

Legitimately just go to a farmer's market/craft fair in your local town/city. You will find someone that does wood/metal work, they'll probably charge you 800-100, then you just put the electronics in how you want.

its rattling so he fixed it mechanically and not by putting lube on it

He paid an engineering firm many thousands of dollars to design a new stabilizer with pin joints that doesn't rattle or tick even without lube

I can't imagine the level of autism you need to be that bothered by the slight noise difference the spacebar makes.

Last time I looked at keyboards, BOX Jades (fairly new at the time) ended up being the sweet spot for high tactility to weight ratio, very tactile without being too heavy. What does the landscape look like now?
Would be especially interested in something similar but not as loud

Before considering an ergo board, you should make sure the rest of your setup is adjusted properly. Chair height, desk height, monitor position, etc. all should be adjusted so that when you're typing your elbows are around 90 degrees, and your wrists floating. You can find several universities with pages on this.

yeah I liked the implication that every engineer thinks work done by other engineers isn't good enough or appropriate for the application. There is always a different opinion on how something should be done
